"But I have written my last op-ed for the Times. Yesterday, I resigned my position. I don’t want to continue to work for a paper that is appeasing Trump and facilitating his assault on democratic rule for craven reasons." something about cutting off one's nose to spite one's face comes to mind........

Words on ammo in CEO shooting echo common phrase on insurer tactics: Delay, deny, defend A message left at the scene of a health insurance executive’s fatal shooting — “deny,” “defend” and “depose” — echoes a phrase commonly used to describe insurer tactics to avoid paying claims. The three words were written on the ammunition a masked gunman used to kill UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday. They’re similar to the phrase “delay, deny, defend” — the way some attorneys describe how insurers deny services and payment, and the title of a 2010 book that was highly critical of the industry. more at https://apnews.com/article/unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting-delay-deny-defend-depose-ee73ceb19f361835c654f04a3b88c50c

New York CNN — UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Midtown Manhattan Wednesday morning in a “brazen, targeted attack” as he walked toward the company’s annual investor conference, New York police said. The gunman remains on the loose. Shortly before 7 a.m., a gunman, masked in the freezing temperatures, “was lying in wait” before opening fire on Thompson, according to NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” she said. “I want to be clear: At this time, every indication is that this was a premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.” The gunman approached Thompson from behind and shot him at least once in the back and once in the right calf, Tisch said. Responding emergency workers took Thompson to Mount Sinai West in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m. more at https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/04/us/brian-thompson-united-healthcare-death/index.html

all - please note that political discussions should only take place in https://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/145-current-events-and-hot-social-topics/ politics should not be discussed anywhere else other than in that forum as it often turns into a slagging match between members. moderators then show up. thread bans, deletions, death, and worse happens then. would not recommend.

as this is in other than english (ote) it has been moved from the IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Case Filing and Progress Reports to the Mexico, Latin & South America regional forum where ote is allowed. as the poster did not indicate what country this concerns nor was it stated in the post, I can only assume this regional forum is the best location until the op states otherwise. charles vj moderation

Vietnamese property tycoon Truong My Lan has lost her appeal against her death sentence for masterminding the world’s biggest bank fraud. The 68-year-old is now in a race for her life because the law in Vietnam states that if she can pay back 75% of what she took, her sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment. In April the trial court found that Truong My Lan had secretly controlled Saigon Commercial Bank, the country’s fifth biggest lender, and taken out loans and cash over more than 10 years through a web of shell companies, amounting to a total of $44bn (£34.5bn). more at https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd753r47815o and steve lehto picked up the story too.

and today, joe did something he said he wouldn't do - he pardoned his son. next time a democrat complains about gun laws being too lax, remind them about this Biden pardons his son Hunter despite previous pledges not to WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden pardoned his son, Hunter, on Sunday night, sparing the younger Biden a possible prison sentence for federal felony gun and tax convictions and reversing his past promises not to use the extraordinary powers of the presidency for the benefit of his family members. The Democratic president had previously said he would not pardon his son or commute his sentence after his convictions in the two cases in Delaware and California. The move comes weeks before Hunter Biden was set to receive his punishment after his trial conviction in the gun case and guilty plea on tax charges, and less than two months before President-elect Donald Trump is set to return to the White House. more at https://apnews.com/article/biden-son-hunter-charges-pardon-pledge-24f3007c2d2f467fa48e21bbc7262525
