  1. wow thanks so much for the support. I feel so much better reading everyone's opinion.

Mrs. P that is great advice about logging the situation. Because it happened at work, I was a little concerned that maybe I crossed a boundary and could get fired. I don't really know this person since I have only worked there 3 weeks but she could easily go to my boss and say I was saying all this bullshit that isn't true. We do work together everyday.

Uling, my husband is black (born in Jamaica) and we have gotten a few comments for being interracial but they kinda rolled off my back. For some reason, I just couldn't let this one roll. I do empathize with minorities however and don't really understand how people have such an issue with colour. I guess because I'm white I haven't really had the feeling like I wasn't welcome in America.

Thanks for the support everyone :) and if it happens again I now have some good come backs!

  2. Hello,

I am Canadian and I have been living in the states for 7 months now. So far everything is going great. I got my work permit, a job, credit, just bought a condo, etc. This past week I was on a natural high from having my life finally fit into place.

Well....today I was going to a meeting with a co worker and she was asking alot about Canada and immigration. She was asking about Canadian's views on America and the war and 9/11. I answered with my honest opinions which is everyone I know in Canada doesn't support the war but that is just my friends and family, I can't speak for 30 million people. I also told her I don't agree with the war and I am not a big supporter of Bush.

So she started saying I should go back to my home country and I'm not welcome here. America doesn't need immigrants like me...if I don't support America then I should leave, etc, etc.

I was really shocked by this and simply said "you asked for my opinion and I didn't mean to offend you but I have the right to my opinion and I am Canadian and grew up in a peace keeping frame of mind"

She just simply said "you don't belong here"

I am really upset about this and have felt sick all day long. I really do love living here and yes, I may not support the war but neither does 50% of america. I view myself as a Canadian living in Florida and that's it. I like living here but I do have my own opinions that I grew up with and I don't see that changing.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had an experience like this and maybe a little advice. I really didn't want to offend her but she was asking for my opinions.

Just feeling rejected at the moment and not sure how to take all of this.

  3. Congrats on the new addition to your family. I highly doubt infopass would do anything but it's always worth a shot! She is only 2.5 months so working isn't hurting the baby (just tiring mommy) but I totally understand how you feel. This whole process is very frustrating for us when we want to help out our loved ones so bad and just can't do anything but watch tv for 4 months.

theresa, you can go to http://infopass.uscis.gov/ to make an appointment to speak with an immigration officer.

I wish you all the best and your ead shouldn't be too far away!

  4. Thanks Raymaga,

Actually we tried about 5 different mortgage brokers and they all told us that since I have no credit established in the US that it wasn't possible for me to be on the mortgage. I really wanted to be on the mortgage to build my credit score and for my AOS interview so I was so happy when someone found the loophole for us.

That's good you didn't have any problem getting on the mortgage.

  5. Hello to all!

I just wanted to share my news because I am soooo happy after the long and boring wait since moving to the US.

I finally landed a job in my field and I start Monday. It's an architectural job which I went to school for and am certified in Canada. Now I can stop applying to Wal Mart and Target :D

Also, my husband and I got a mortgage and we are closing on a condo on Sept. 1st. The mortgage broker found a loophole in the system so that my name can be on the mortgage and I can build my credit rating now with it.

Here is the deal....since my husband qualified for the loan on his own income/credit score, they just add me on and say my income is $0 (I haven't started working yet). I guess the law states that if the person with the good credit score makes 50% or more of the gross household income than you can have someone with no/bad credit put on the mortgage. All they needed was a copy of my social security card, my passport, and my visa. Now they are joking with me saying in about 12 months I will be getting so many credit card applications in the mail I will be complaining of having good credit lol.

I'm so happy. I have a new job, a new home and I am on my way to building excellent credit

I wanted to thank everyone here through the journey of getting my EAD/SSN. You guys were such a great help and even greater when I needed the support I couldn't get from the people in my life (they just don't get it do they lol).

    Terri

  6. Hello,

I am going to be getting a notorized letter from my inlaws saying that I have lived with them for x amount of months. It would probably look something like this

    DATE

    YOUR ADDRESS

    IMMIGRATION ADDRESS

    RE: STATEMENT OF RESIDENCY

    To Whom it May Concern:

(You and your spouses full name) have been living with (full name of your parents) since (date) until the present time. We (charge/do not charge) rent in the amount of $___.

If you have any questions, you may contact us at by phone at (parents phone number), or by email at (parents email).

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Mothers full name

    (mothers signature)

    Fathers Full name

    (fathers signature)

    NOTARIZED

That's about it. If you have something simple like that, I'm sure it would be fine. Anyone else have a suggestion to help them out??

  7. Hello,

I kind of have the same question as you and I was told "it's recommended to file as soon as possible" My husband and I have been busy and it's taking some time to get the paperwork together and the fees. I entered the US in April on a K3.

I definately wouldn't leave it past 1 year from the time you had your medical in your home country. If you do this then you have to get a new medical.

Lets hope you get some helpfull replies to this.

  8. I never even thought about going to RBC. I didn't realize they were in Florida. Good idea and thanks to everyone else for your ideas.

lauraxmarie, you might want to be carefull riding your spouses bad credit. It could end up on your score however, I don't really know...just a guess.

dr_lha, sorry I didn't do a search first. Was just feeling really frustrated when I posted this and didn't even bother to look at other posts first.

Thanks again for the advice all

    Terri

  9. Thanks so much for the support. I don't have a job yet however I just went to an interview on Friday that seemed very promising. My career field is Architecture so I really hope that my credit score means nothing when applying for a job in that field.

When I apply for any credit cards I just say I am self employed and our gross household income is under $30,000 (my husbands income).

I have heard of secured credit cards through my bank but they wanted $300 minimum to get one and I don't really have that kind of cash laying around so was looking for a cheaper option. I still have to pay to adjust my status in the next couple weeks.

My husband was preapproved for a home loan already but we really want my name on the mortgage too for immigration purposes and just so I can feel like I have something in my life lol. Also, I did work in my field for 1 year back home in Canada so maybe that will help.

I didn't know getting added to my husbands credit cards would help my credit score. He has excellent credit so that is good!!

I think I might try to get a JC Penny card or other department store too.

Also, I read somewhere that you can get a cosigner on a credit card however, whenever I see the applications I dont' see a spot for a cosigner.

Thanks again for the help and it's good to know everyone here goes through the same thing I do :)

  10. Hello all,

So I have run into a problem that I can't really find an answer to. How can I build credit if I can't get a credit card due to my "lack of credit history". The credit card companies are telling me since I have no credit history they won't approve me for a credit card. I was told I could sign up for another card for "bad credit" for a low annual cost of $49!!!!

This is getting frustrating. I need credit to get a home loan however no one will give me credit. The mortgage companies just keep saying get a credit card and start building your credit. The credit card companies say you have no credit so ####### off.

I had absolutely perfect credit in Canada that took me 8 years to establish and now I come here and considered the same as someone who went bankrupt.

Also, my husband told me that I might be passed up on a job because of my lack of credit. He told me that they do credit checks and if someone else that is up for a job has excellent credit I may get passed over. Is this true? In Canada that is unheard of but I keep forgetting.....we are dealing with americans now.

Ok ranting done now lol. Just a little frustrated and looking for some advice.

    Thanks

  11. I don't understand what you mean by non civil. Does that mean you will just have the ceremony for family but not actually sign any legal papers? If that is the case then yes you can file for K1 and then marry in the US in the June timeframe if your timeline goes on plan. You can not be married in Mexico legally and then file for K1 since that is a fiance visa with the intention of you marrying in the US.

Going to the states with a K1 visa in process could be a problem but not necessarily. I used to cross into the US from Canada alot while I had my K3 in the process. Just be honest with the crossing guard and have proof that you are filing paperwork and that you will be returning to Mexico.

    Hope that helps

  12. Hello,

I am going to visit my family in Canada in September and I am currently here on a K3 visa. When I cross the border do I need to do anything special or just show them my K3 visa? Does the I-94 have to do with anything when traveling?

Thanks for your help, I have not left the country yet on my K3.

    Terri

  13. I hope you get rescheduled really soon. Don't worry about your mistake and don't beat yourself up over it. You are human and we all make these kind of mistakes. I am very ####### about things so when I make a mistake it's like the end of the world but you just have to remember that EVERYONE makes mistakes. They will understand what happened and you will be fine.

I'll never forget when I got my first full time job and forgot to set my alarm clock the night before lol. I wake up at 10am to the phone ringing and my new boss is asking why I am not at work.

We all mistakes so don't let this get you down.

    Good luck to you!!!!

  14. Hello,

I haven't even filed for AOS yet however from what I read on this site you should probably bring 2 copies of everything you originally sent.

For the co sponsor issue...you might want to bring a few pay stubs or employment letter. Maybe a bank statement to show how much they have in the bank. Bring 2 copies of the original I-864 too.

You don't need a SSN to open a joint bank account with all banks. Try going to a few and use your passport to open one. I got a joint account with my husband at Wachovia with my passport/birth certificate.

I'm not sure about the vaccination. Are you talking about the vaccination supplement form?? Did you have a medical already for AOS or for a K visa? Did they ask you for a vaccination supplement form?

Hmmmm other advice would be anything you can do to prove combined debts. Try getting added to your husbands credit cards, get your name on the lease/mortgage (or get someone to write a notarized letter saying you live with your husband). Try getting joint health insurance or car insurance. I have heard people showing their life insurance with the spouse as the beneficery. Bring some mail addressed to the 2 of you at the same address (join netflix or something like that). Other people bring phone records and pictures.

Hope that helps abit and congrats on your speedy interview!!

    Good luck

  15. I just think you need to give it some more time. I know how frustrating it is to go for months and not hear anything. Just be happy you don't live in Orlando where they are currently taking 2 years to book interviews! Also, you should be happy that you are here with your spouse while doing all the waiting....alot of us waited 6-12 months in our home countries while a "K" visa was being processed.

    Good luck to you
