Congratulations Gabreigns on your citizenship 

I just had my oath ceremony today and I am happy to say that I am now a Naturalized US Citizen. 
The ceremony at USCIS was really well done and there were about 130 people from 45 countries for the ceremony. 
 
Visajourney has been a great source of information and experiences and the users on it make the real difference.

I appreciate all the responses, positive and negative.  A few points:
 
 - yes, my MIL has a "bucket list" of becoming an American citizen. It's a dream of hers, really, whether there is any practical reason or not.  She's only been here 5 years, and her husband died 2 years ago from cancer, so she's just been living with us since then.  She's a very simple, plain old lady, no formal education, very meek and timid and scared of just about everything here. 
 
 - I talked with a local immigration attorney who knows the officers at this location.  He said most of them were nice, but some of them weren't, and this particular woman "was the worst of them, very, very bad."  Apparently she has a reputation.  When my MIL came to her, she didn't smile, say "how are you," nothing. Just waved at her to follow her and strode to her office.  I did NOT go to the office with them.
 
 - Once in the office, not a word was said. She just pointed at a  chair, sat behind her desk, grabbed a piece of paper (apparently with civics questions on it) and started throwing questions at my MIL so fast she didn't even have time to answer some of them.  No greeting, no "small talk," no oath, nothing. The woman (and I can testify to this) talked VERY fast, and with a hispanic accent. She didn't even look up at my MIL when she asked the questions.  She had an angry facial expression during the entire interview.  On one occasion, my MIL asked politely, "can you repeated, please?" and the officer displayed an angry, frustrated expression. My MIL didn't try that again.  It was pointless, anyway; this woman was utterly IMPOSSIBLE for her to understand.
 
Some people seem to think that just because you "know English," you should be able to jabber like a TV sports announcer. 
 
When she finished, the officer simply stood up, walked to the door and held it open, said "2nd interview" and motioned for my MIL to leave.
 
 - My MIL *CAN* pass all three tests, and answer the N400 questions.  That wasn't the issue.  The issue was that she was not ABLE to take and pass the tests because of the officer's behavior.  If she had JUST been a LITTLE more polite and a little more patient, my MIL would have passed with flying colors.
 
And again, a major issue here is her age.  It is virtually impossible for an 80 year old woman to learn to read, write and speak English from scratch, no matter what she does.
 
- FWIW, having a translator present is an option only if they've lived here 15 years.  My MIL won't even be alive 10 years from now.
 
Talking to an immigration attorney Monday who has a reputation for being aggressive and being a fighter when it comes to dealing with the U.S. government.  Hopefully he will be able to contribute something.

These are facts, not opinions.
The only thing that is an opinion here is that she deserves dignity, which I hope you agree with.

The interviewer has to understand the situation that some people are here in. The interviewer needs to understand that we cant leave our old parent's behind.
Accent or language shouldn't be an excuse for dismissal.

I remember during one of my interviews the interviewer mentioned that they were really concerned with chain migration and its effects on the medicaid and the social security system. In other words bringing the elderly from other countries and using the medicaid system will only overburden and break the system eventually. She mentioned that medicaid is for people who have paid in to the system over time and she is worried that she herself wont be able to get medicaid because of people who migrated here without paying in to the system and using up the existing limited pool of money making the entire system expensive and in the long run kill the system. Not to mention that politicians use these as their honeypots to get money out when they need it to balance state budgets.
 
So I see why the interviewer could be a biased against the elderly unless the applicants are willing to take care of them completely without hooking in to the ailing medicaid system.
 
Nevertheless it is a sad truth of our times. The blame lies on both sides and hopefully there can be a better way to solve it in the future.

I am in no place to judge who is right or not. Besides you mentioning what is appropriate or not is not going to change the situation that the poor old lady and her family is in.

Very uplifting reading this. I am in the same boat with you guys. I have my N400 interview mid next September in Chicago but with pending I-751. I hope I get a favorable outcome.

@gabreigns, you can look up naturalization ceremonies in the Northern Illinois district here: http://www.ilnd.uscourts.gov/Naturalization.aspx. Right now it only shows tomorrow because it shows one month at a time, but like @kdg said, (administrative) ceremonies in the Chicago area are very frequent.
 
I'm the one who waited since the April interview to get scheduled for the oath, and I filed mid-July 2017, so my process will have taken over 14 months by the time I'm done 😂 such is life as a Central Illinois resident.
 
@kdg I have yet to receive the oath notice but I think that for most oaths they want people to show up 2 hours before, I assume too that it is for the paperwork, putting people in line, collecting green cards and such.

I am also a US citizen! Just a quick overview for Los Angeles Convention Center ceremony: My appointment was for 8:00 am on Friday. I had a domestic flight the same day at 1:00 pm. I decided to take a risk and keep the appointment. I was at the convention center by 7:00 am. Passed the security and checked in by 7:30 am. By 9:55 am I was outside with my certificate in hand and made it to the airport by 11:00 am! Just thought this might be useful for someone in a similar situation. Sorry about the delay in posting this. Was traveling  today after my interview.
  My wife and I ended up getting there about 15 minutes before schedule however I realized that we were in the wrong line.  The citizenship interview line is on the 3rd floor in Chicago. Once we were at the correct line we got a number and waited for the appointment. In about 20 minutes we were called in by a woman who was polite courteous professional and wonderful to talk to. She brought up the topic of my 751 and 400 being adjudicated together as the 751must be adjudicated before n-400. So combo interview.  She went on to mention that it’s a good thing i brought my wife as she was going to ask her questions as well. She mentioned that i751 cases are requiring an interview as well. She brought out both the files together and started asking my wife questions based on the I-751 like where she worked, phone number, ssn etc. Asked my wife for her drivers license to make copies.  She made us both sign I-751 documents  and my wife was escorted out prior to my n400 interview. Asked if I have travelled outside the country since applying and duration? She asked me if I had any arrests or warrants and I mentioned that I did not.    Pretty standard fare 6 questions and rapid fire questions about character trait checkboxes   Advice: make sure you try and upload any documents like last 2 year tax return, your passport copies beforehand and also bring a copy.  Any documents you carry make sure the copies are single sided. It’s easier for them to make copies that way.   I was done in about 45 minutes from the time I was called in for the interview and she gave me a letter saying that I have been approved for naturalization. Once a final approval is granted I will be notified of when and where to report for naturalization ceremony. She also mentioned that it might take up to 30-40 days to get an oath ceremony. The reason it’s taking this long is because of the 2 systems that need to be updated for 751 and 400 and also each of their final review. Now hoping for a quick turnaround. Will update accordingly.

Had my Oath Ceremony in Columbus, Ohio. The ceremony was at Franklin County Board Of Elections at 11:45. I showed up at about 11, but they opened the doors only at 11:30. There were about 130 petitioners, most of them came with family members. First we had to come to a table and give up all the USCIS documents we had. I gave my expired EAD and showed the officer my passport stamp, which he crossed out with a pen. Then we had to go to another table and get a voter registration form. I didn't realize it was a requirement to register to vote (I thought everyone could choose to vote or not to vote, but they told us we had to fill out the form). They gave us 15 mins to fill out the form, and then we got seated and sang a country song "God Bless the U.S.A." (which was weird, I expected to sing the national anthem instead). Then at 1pm the judge arrived, gave a 3 min speech about the US being a country of immigrants. Then she read the Oath of Allegiance (the whole thing!) and we just had to say "I do" instead of repeating the Oath part by part. After that one by one we went to receive our certificates. I was done by 2pm. So I'd say the ceremony was a bit unusual, not exactly how other people describe it.
