  1. Years ago. He did not want to apply for citizenship when he was eligible immediately and other things took priority.
  2. Was very shocked yesterday to find my husband's naturalization interview has been scheduled already. This seems really fast for Baltimore? We did not think it would be until next year! A little nervous but very excited now and he's busy studying. The date is unfortunately during our annual vacation so we will have quite a trip and travel time to make it but it's certainly doable. Is there anything else we need to know or should take with us? We will have to pack it all in our suitcases. Can barely believe it's almost over.
  3. Nope. Once again last night they lost him. He seems to move about half hour before darkness each evening. He escaped from a prison that is notorious for poor security, using the same route a fellow inmate used a couple months back. He has some military training and is skilled in climbing. Also said to be comfortable in jungle. The woodlands he's in are thick, but he does seem to be trying to follow the river, possibly trying to get to the train tracks along 95. We are in a stretch of extremely hot weather, so I wonder where he is sheltering during the day time. He has stolen food, but not much.
  4. I didn't think much about the manhunt for the convicted murderer who escaped from lax jail security (don't get me started). For the holiday weekend we had planned on spending some time at the beach and then taking a roadtrip to Longwood Gardens. We managed to avoid (what locals call the Joe Jam) and were puzzled when we started seeing roadblocks. When we arrived at the gardens I saw just about every state and federal law enforcement agency, and a Garden employee getting into a heated argument with a tour bus driver, and another frantically waving at cars to evacuate. I saw a hell of a lot of men with big guns. Oh man, what had we stumbled onto? Meanwhile the feds, US Marshals, and secret service were setting up shop along the road and they told us that everything would be shut and that we should go back to where we came from. Along the way I saw a CNN truck setting up shop. At this point we had no clue what had happened, but a lot of locals at the store were talking about it. The murderer had been spotted near the park, and for safety everywhere had to be closed. We decided to head back down the road, to Joe's home turf, to another location we thought would be more secure. Afterall if there's a president to protect, they'd be stupid to let this guy keep advancing right? We did end up having a nice day, and everyone was really kind at welcoming all the confused travelers. Longwood is not cheap man, and there were people scheduled to have bridal photoshoots. Another couple had driven six hours to be there. But for all the police, media, military, and federal agents the guy has continued to evade capture. I was appalled that Longwood actually opened yesterday to the public, despite road blocks, and heavy police presence. They tried to reassure us that there wasn't danger to patrons and would we consider coming? Well, I didn't feel safe, so we did not go and did not believe for a second that they had a handle on the situation. We know the place extremely well, and after 5 nights of the police bungling chasing this guy, we knew that there were so many excellent ways of hiding on that property. A source told me that they were confident that they would catch him last night by sending tactical teams into the forest. Well, apparently Longwood decided to inform the police this morning (!!!) that he was spotted deep within their property 2 hours after closing last night. While everyone was off staring into the wrong part of the woods for hours, this guy has been having a time. Now they have asked the Maryland and Delaware police for assistance. Maybe we can do better? Because I don't know what the PA police and feds have been doing. If they don't stop this guy soon he can easily wander into Joe's neighborhood - which is why I think he mumbled something stupid about not coming back 'home' for security issues. Anyway, that was our adventure, not going back there any time soon. https://6abc.com/chester-county-pa-prison-escape-danelo-cavalcante-update-convicted-murderer-pennsylvania-escapee/13738052/
  5. I am truly in shock that my husband received his appointment for interview at Baltimore today for Oct 4th. We had expected to wait for 16 months at this point. Even more crazy is that we will be on our annual vacation that day. It will be quite a roadtrip for us, but we intend to certainly go. Time to tie him down and make him study some more. 😊 Does anyone know what we should bring?
  6. Found it! https://nypost.com/2023/09/04/delta-flight-forced-into-emergency-landing-by-passengers-diarrhea/
  7. Well I have seen some things on planes so... I heard there was a problem on a flight yesterday where a passenger apparently had profuse diarrhea throughout the plane. They had to make an emergency landing.
  8. Yesterday's episode was even more disturbing than the first. The aide shouted right at him like he's an idiot. Felt so bad for him. You'd think he'd be horrified and embarrassed. If he is having an absence seizure, shouting is not something you should be doing. He should have been taken to the hospital. Today his doctor released a statement saying "oh he's fine" but word on the street is this doctor didn't actually consult with his supposed neurology team that actually know what's going on, and the rest of the GOP leadership and colleagues are being kept in the dark about his condition. There is a lot of frustration.
  9. You will find that license rules vary from state to state, and to make it even more frustrating, from DMV to DMV depending on the employee's mood and interpretation of the rules which change from day to day. Make sure you know the rules and requirements, have a print out if needed, or ask for supervisor. For some, if you already know how to drive and have a license, you can skip the permit process and go straight to full license if you can past a couple tests. That is what my husband managed to do for MD - got a full license so long as he passed the written test, a brief driving test, and the drug/alcohol course. If he had started from scratch it would have been a very lengthy process. We waited until having the EAD in hand, as it was less hassle. Sometimes a state also has an 'exchange' program usually with a couple specific countries. Where you trade in your foreign license for the state license. It's another way to skip ahead. You'll likely also need your name on some kind of mail coming to your US address. They generally like to see bank statements or something like that. You may also need an SSN. Hopefully you have or have started to work on those. If you go to the Virginia DMV's website you will see it talk about the ability to exchange a license. Unfortunately your country of origin does not qualify, but they do mention this: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/license/applying/exchange-foreign-dl In other words it sounds like VA may be similar to MD in that as long as you pass a couple other things and prove you've got a license from a country but not those that are on the 'reciprocal list' you can skip the lengthy learners permit process. So as long as you've got the required documents to start the process, and feel knowledgeable and comfortable driving in the US, you should be good.
  10. It's open for me. The relevant paragraph: And her complaining: She goes on and on. It's really very silly. I'm laughing that she's trying to say it's her 'favorite line' and can't see what the objection would be. I would say that by the standards of Fat Bottomed Girls, there are many songs that I'm betting the company would find troublesome for kids. They may not have made the cut? I don't know. Others got an advisory label on them, which may not be good enough for some parents.
  11. You can certainly marry while visiting on the WVP (the ESTA is just what gets you on the plane), provided, and that's a big BUT, you can satisfy the officers at the POE. You must return home after you marry and then you would file for a spousal visa. It's going to be another long wait for that. You can also go through the lengthy process of applying for a K1, arrive, marry, and go home. But the point of a K1 isn't exactly to do that. A K1 grants you the ability to marry in the US and to remain there by applying to adjust status (your first green card). The tradeoff is that you cannot work until authorized, so unless the couple is prepared for that with plenty of funds, it may not be ideal for some. For others, at least it is a way for the couple to never be apart again. As someone that went through the K1 process, I would encourage this path if you intend to stay in the US and you have an adequate plan for funds, insurance, and a long downtime before working. The OP's initial post mentioned applying for a UK spousal visa so that the US citizen can live in the UK? So I'm confused, where does the OP want to live?
  12. Here is an example: The Telegraph accurately reporting on why the song was removed. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/08/20/fat-bottomed-girls-dropped-queen-greatest-hits-young-audien/ But in the same paper we have a lady opining about Queen's love of body positivity as the reason. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/columnists/2023/08/22/fat-bottomed-girls-anthem-queen-cancelled/ Well, which is it?
  13. Her objection doesn't mean that's the reason why the song was removed which has been repeated in numerous articles now. I have also seen Ted Cruz comment on 'canceling Queen' without actually knowing what he is talking about. A person can make up whatever thoughts about this song and the reasons for it's removal all they want. Doesn't make it true.
  14. Do you believe the lyrics of Fat Bottomed Girls are appropriate for children, or not? I don't believe many of the rap songs you are thinking of would be allowed on that particular streaming website either. What is fine for you, won't be fine for other parent's children's precious ears. These days there are a lot of content being removed to 'protect kids'. How is this that different?
  15. I can't imagine there is room for WAP or many Lizzo songs on that particular children's streaming music site you know? The 80s called and want those hearings where congress yelled at lyricists for the songs we all know and adore today, and Dee Snider and Frank Zappa ripped them to shreds. I believe Quiet Riot's cover of "Come (not sure the actual word is VJ friendly) on Feel the Noize" was discussed there, which still is an absolute banger of a tune as well as the 'Filthy 15' - all classic and beloved tunes today. Not sure if Queen was discussed, but I recall at those times there were tons of parents heaping music onto bonfires and bulldozers in a moral panic.
  16. You know I thought people were all about 'protecting' kids by removing what they can see and hear. This song was removed off of a kid's streaming music site for the 'clean' version of a Queen album uploaded there. Not because it's about 'fat girls' but because of the rest of the lyrical content which is sexual in nature. Yes sure, as in after having some kind of inappropriate encounter with his fat nanny called a word that's a euphemism that big girls really turn the singer on and won't they take him home to bed. So it's great that big girls turn Brian May on. But is it an appropriate song for kids? Well I didn't have a problem with it and many other songs as an innocent kid, but nowadays people need smelling salts. It is definitely an innuendo-y song. There's many Queen songs like that. I mean...do people actually take a look at lyrics anymore? I wonder if Bicycle Race is on the album, because oh boy those kids will have no idea what that's all about.
  17. It would be nice if we could all begin relationships due entirely to love. In Jane Austin's time it was complex, in that women were expected to be a certain way, were still largely 'property', and sheltered the burden of their entire family's well being, status, and titles. Female characters in Austin's books are often in desperate circumstances but resistant to the idea of 'marrying up'. The happy endings are cliche in that not only do they find a man that loves them, but they are usually rich too. Unless you married 'well' a woman would be homeless, a disgraced prostitute, or in the poorhouse if she did not have a secure financial future. A woman would also have been outcast if she tried to marry a man of a 'lower class' or station. Women of today have the ability to choose the man they are looking for. Regardless of if the man is rich or poor, or somewhere in between, they should make responsible choices. How much money a man has, has never been a major concern of mine. There are plenty of men and women that enter into those type of relationships, I'm never sure how much love is there, but to each their own I guess.
  18. Guess I'm one of those women that can open her own jars of pickles. 😉
  19. The bleak world of the internet eh? It's a shame when people turn to toxic nutjobs for advice.
  20. Hey sometimes I have dumb blonde moments, where my brain breaks and I think.. "wait that spelling isn't right is it?" 😉 I remember he had to call and speak to his travel insurance broker to get it, as it wasn't something they offered online. I think it's not a terrible idea, especially if you're moving a lot of household stuff with you on the plane for your final trip like he was.
  21. It was really awkward having your teeth being drilled while hearing kids screaming and running down the hallway, poking heads in the rooms and giggling. Thought to myself, this is just silly. He explained of course, and I felt bad for him. Just hope he doesn't get in trouble. Overall I think working from home is something a lot of employers should be able to offer if the job can truly be done from home. It's an attractive offer to parents that are struggling with childcare. There's nothing terrible about it if the person really is doing their job of course. They save money on food, gas, and travel costs too. I have had some times where I've had to remind him he's working overtime or gotten so caught up in working he's not taking time to relax, but overall he feels so much more productive than going to the office.
  22. I wondered that too, and thought the whole situation ridiculous. But I know he's kind and just trying to help his employees. When it comes to kids, I'd have high standards... which is why I'd watch kids myself instead of doing daycare, but I know that's not possible for everyone. Raising kids takes money... huge amounts these days.
  23. Well as someone that talked extensively to insurance companies about this subject back in the day, again I can assure you travel insurance will only cover someone that is visiting a country and returning home. You can feel free to waste your money on it for the purposes of covering the flight and luggage, but once the fiance lands the coverage is null 24-48hrs after. A K-1 is a non-immigrant visa but it offers dual intent. It exists in both worlds per say because it allows you to stay and immigrate, it allows you to (once married) adjust status and reside in the US, and does not require you to return home. These type of insurances offer no coverage to a K1 in the way a visitor would be offered, because the intent is immigration, residing, living here, and not visiting. Afterall, the sponsor does sign a document saying they will be financially responsible. The insurance company is in the interest of covering someone that is not intending on living in the US. Marrying late will almost certainly throw up challenges in obtaining proper health insurance, if that is an important factor to the both of you. That being said there is no longer a health insurance penalty, so going without insurance will all just be in how much you two want to risk. And if you don't want to risk anything, then my suggestion is to rethink a late marriage plan. Oh I know, you've got a venue and all that stuff set most likely. Well none of that stops a courthouse appointment, and celebrating everything else later on. In my honest opinion, temporary insurances which directly marketed to new immigrants like K1s especially, is another form of risk. You pay for supposed peace of mind, but what you get is really nothing as it is not ACA compliant. FWIW, when I brought my husband here, our wedding date was within a month of his arrival, so there was a brief time without coverage. We were careful, but acknowledged if there was an illness, it would be paid out of pocket because the ''options'' out there are really dumb. I made sure to get the SSN sorted, and then when married called my insurance company and added him to my plan. Could we have hopped over to the courthouse and kept the big thing the same so that I could have added him ASAP? Sure. But we were willing to take the risk, as we didn't wait very long. A longer time to wait and in this age of COVID, no way we would have waited. Over the years there have been many stories of people that ran into great problems not having insurance, and I really feel for them. You have to make the best decision for what's going on in your lives. It is perfectly reasonable though to purchase ''one way'' insurance for the flight just in case something goes wrong there. It's something we also did.
  24. Was at my dentist last month, and was greeted by screaming kids running through the halls. Basically there seems to be no available childcare facilities that are accepting new kids this year. All booked up with waiting lists (hearing the same thing going on at all the schools in town). He started letting his staff bring their kids in for the summer because no one could afford what rare places were open in the next state over.. prices too steep. He joked about opening his own daycare in the basement.
