There are only two ways he can adjust status and stay in the US. One is the "normal" K1 visa way - he files an I-485 and you submit an I-864 affidavit of support, along with the normal evidence. The other is VAWA.
He can't file for adjustment of status the "normal" way without your help. He would need your affidavit of support. They won't approve his green card without it.
VAWA is available to anyone who is married to a US citizen or permanent resident, and has been "battered or subjected to extreme cruelty" by their spouse. While many VAWA applicants are genuine, there are also many scammers. The scammers are usually the ones who can't or won't pretend to be in a sincere relationship long enough to adjust status the "normal" way, or who may not otherwise be eligible to adjust status (an EWI, for example).
Your husband has done some homework, but he is apparently not completely educated on the process. His assertion that you are somehow legally required to pay for his adjustment of status is baloney. In addition, his statement about bringing him here "under your support" implies that he believes you are legally obligated to support him. Again, this is baloney. The I-134 affidavit of support you signed for him to get a visa is not legally binding on you. You aren't legally obligated to pay for anything. I have no idea whether his embassy can help him with an attorney, but that's a tactic I've not heard of before.
Anyway, if he decides to pursue a VAWA case then you will not be involved at all in the USCIS process, and they will probably not contact you. That makes sense. If you had actually abused him then anything you said to USCIS would be suspect, anyway. His problem as it relates to you is that he needs evidence of abuse to successfully win a VAWA case. His recordings of your arguments, if they actually exist, are probably useless unless you've made threats during those arguments regarding his immigration status. Using someone's immigration status as a method of manipulating them is considered a form of abuse for the purposes of VAWA. If he's being coached then he probably knows that the evidence he's got is insufficient, so he'll try to manufacture more evidence to support his case. This means he may try to start an argument with you and then call the police claiming you either harmed him (self inflicted wounds are not uncommon in these cases), or that you threatened to harm him. He may also request a restraining order against you, which would basically block you from going into your own home. These things create a record with the local police department that he can use to support his VAWA case. The seriously bad news is that you'll have a record for domestic violence, even if it's all bullcrap.
As painful as it might be, you might have to leave your home while the divorce is pending in order to save your reputation and avoid DV charges. If you remain in the home, and if he wants the evidence bad enough, he'll make it happen.

Here's my take, opinion on the processing estimates provided by USCIS Customer "Service".
They most likely only update the official processing date once a month or so. They were reporting June 16 for at least 2 months which was probably true due to the fact that there was a clear slow down at the end of the year. Now that the pace has picked up the reported date should start advancing faster again.
If you follow the VJ users who reported receiving their NOA2 the past week or so it would appear that they are working July 18-19 or so. There are recent approvals from users in late July and even one for early August, but I know that at least in one of those cases they requested and received an expedite.
Regarding the random WAC#'s that show initial review that were received in June and earlier, keep in mind that these can include applications for all types of family members. It is my understanding that the wait is longer for those that don't qualify under IR-1/CR-1.
For those of you with September and October NOA1 dates I wouldn't be surprised if CSC is able to get back to approving petitions in under 5 months. USCIS has a page that shows trends over the past 24 months and if this year follows those trends there should be a spike in approvals during February. This same trend showed a slow down at the end of the year. I'm guessing this slow down is caused by a combination of higher than average vacation days and a shifted focus towards other types of visa applications that have a shorter window of approval, like work visas.
Bottom line, we should see an increase in the number of approvals in the coming weeks and the processing time should start to drop below the current 6 1/2 month mark.
For those that are getting close my suggestion would be to be ready now for the NVC phase. Once the NVC assigns a number to your case the process really moves fast and is mostly dependent on how ready you are. Make sure you qualify to sponsor your spouse under the AOS requirements and if you don't make sure you have a qualified co-sponsor ready now. For the Visa application make sure you have the required documents, especially the police certificate from any country your spouse resided in after 16 years of age.

We just sent my husband's N-400 yesterday. We were in no rush (he was eligible to send it since last July) but he could really use an American passport for work since Bulgaria and Romania have different entry requirements than the rest of the EU for many countries. I see it like this, the US gov't acknowledges that people make mistakes sometimes. In the case of an immigrant on welfare, either you pay for your mistake, or the taxpayers as a whole do.
Whether or not you are old, rich, educated, etc etc, nobody can vouch for your spouse more than you can.
Personally, what kind of person asks someone that they love to leave their home/country/family and then (if things don't work out) say OOPS I'm not responsible for THAT at all.

I don't think it's rude to impart very tough learned wisdom one picks up along the way. In fact, I think it's a very nice gesture, considering that someone is taking personal time to give a total stranger a part of the puzzle that she may or may not have missed.
If someone came on and said 'you're wrong, stupid, etc' I would agree that it's not appropriate at all.
