  1. Your GC card number is on the back in the goldish strip. It is not on the front. This question is flawed, and the best way is to speak with someone, but check if you can enter the card number listed on the back strip (you'll have to hold it up to the light to see it). It is labelled Card number.

Thank you. I saw the gold strip and typed both my Card number and Alien number but it still doesn't recognize my details. I'll phone them.

Thanks everyone, though, for trying to help.

  2. Is the number that you put in before, the receipt number for the card? It can start with LIN, SRC, EAC, etc. That would be your document number. It's 13 digits in total, including the letters. So if it has any more numbers, only put the first 10 I will post a link.

    https://e-verify.uscis.gov/esp/help/EvHelpPermResCardNumber.htm

Yes, I saw that link. The number starts with 3 letters, and then 10 numbers, which is the Card Number. That website says that the Document number is exactly the same but when I write it, it says "Invalid entry for 'Passport Number or document number'. Please enter alphanumeric with minimum length of 6 characters and maximum length of 12 characters." so I take the 3 letters out and then submit my application and it says "We cannot verify your information at this time. Please contact Customer Service at 1-877-623-6765 (TTY: 1-877-623-7773) for assistance." and any other number I try it keeps saying that. It might be a website problem and not my card then, hmmm.

  3. When you specify the document you are using, you have to enter it exactly how it says. For example, for the green card, the A number has to be written in nine digits. If it has less than 9 digits you have to add enough zeros in front to make it 9 digits. Also be sure if the system is asking you to enter it with or without the letter A. When we applied for my spouse's coverage in the exchange it asked for the receipt number, it could be the receipt number that it's asking you for and not the A number in that particular field. My spouse's began with LIN, but it could be something else and it would be in the back of your card where all those arrows are. If you could post a snapshot of your screen, it would help.

I added zeros but it is still not working. What is the receipt number? I can't remember what mine would be.

Oh, I see. Thank you! The alien number is fine, it's the part that says "Passport or document number" I will snapshot that part.

  5. I'm applying online for health coverage (Massachusetts) and it is asking me for my immigration documents. Well, I have a green card so I put that and it asked me for my Alien number, Passport or document number, Category code, Card number and the dates it was awarded/will be expired. Everything apart from "Passport or document number" works when I type it in, so I googled "document number on green card" and a website came up saying it's the same as the Card number so I wrote that again and it didn't accept it! So I removed the letters and just wrote the numbers and, again, didn't accept! I tried putting in my passport number even though I only need to provide my green card details and it didn't accept that either. I tried typing in my alien number, again, didn't accept. On the back of my card, there is a number right at the top left so I typed that in and, again, didn't accept!

I am so annoyed right now, so I came here to see if you guys can help me please? If not, I'll have to call them.

    EDIT: it keeps saying this:

    Error: The format is incorrect.

Invalid entry for 'Passport Number or document number'. Please enter alphanumeric with minimum length of 6 characters and maximum length of 12 characters.
  6. great topic, in addition to the s s number I believe there is an id requirement such as photo id, etc... also may matter if it is a bank or credit union....

you may also want to bring the $9999 cash limit in, and I think some places you can also pre-load prepaid visa/debit cards not sure maximum amount.

we were just discussing this with family as can imagine larger chunks would have to be reported or illegal/other activities could be suspected.

you may want to consider a limit with how much you can access online too? either increase decrease etc...

maybe contact an accountant or tax person in your home country as well as USA?

    cheers

Yes, I have my passport and marriage certificate etc, I just need to apply for an SSN. I was wondering about that cash limit, because at the airport you have to declare if you have over $10,000 but I guess it doesn't apply to debit cards. I actually have 3 accounts with the same bank, but I can move the money around as I have access to my accounts online.

  7. You have already been taxed on it in the UK ( I assume) so no you will not be taxed again. I used a company called HiFx to transfer money over. Google them and either set up an account online or call them. You will probably get a better exchange rate from them than from your normal bank. They don't have any commission or fees. Strictly speaking you should be in the UK to use them though.

Opening a bank account is easy enough, I opened 2 without an SSN but not all banks let you.

Ring the bank of your choice and ask them what you will need to bring in with you.

I wasn't eligible in the UK to be taxed, I don't know if that will mean I will be taxed over here? I am in the USA now so I guess I can't use that site. Thanks though! :)

  8. I just got accepted for permanent residency and I need to open a bank account here in order to put all my money here. I know I need to apply for an SSN first. So, after I get the SSN, what else do I need in order to transfer my money? I have my debit card from the UK which has my account number on it so I know what the account number is. I also have access to my account online. Is there anything else I need? Also, will I get taxed on the money I will bring? Somebody told me that but everywhere I've looked online says I don't get taxed.

I don't know which forum I should be posting this so I just chose here. If it's the wrong place, please move it to where it should be. Thanks :)

  9. Hello,

I just created my account here and wanted to introduce myself and my case :)

Me (22) and my hubby (27, USC) met online in 2008, I visited 2 times in 2010 and in 2011 again. I was just visiting, didn't plan to stay or anything. I came to atlanta (he Is from alabama) on 5/26/2011 and He asked me to marry him on 6/6/2011 .. we just decided to go to the courthouse and got married 6/7/2011 :) we didnt have a big wedding. It was only him and me but I loved it :) well my hubby has a lot of health issues.. he was on dialysis and waiting for a kidney transplant since he was 16 years old. Long story short.. we just sent off aos and it was received 4/30/2014. Almost 3 years after we got married. I have read here that overstay is ok? Does anybody has experience or advice for such a long overstay? Also my passport just expired in april. Do I need to get it renewed asap or can I wait since it would be a long trip to Atlanta? It would be nice to have some advice!

    Thank y'all :)

Overstay is forgiven for spouses of US citizens. I overstayed 4 weeks before sending off my paperwork and I just got approved for a green card yesterday haha :) but I've heard of people staying for years and they were fine. You will need to get your passport renewed as they may want to see it when you have your GC interview. Do you have any other form of ID?

  10. Awww, thanks! :) Just in case anybody was wondering, the guy was asking my husband a lot of questions about his job as he was curious if that's how we met (as my husband deals with customers online) and also asked if I had a bank account here which I don't yet because I don't have an SSN and my husband explained that he applied for a bank account and that he's going to put my name on it when I get an SSN. The guy then just asked to see our photos and that was all, really. My husband showed him his recent pay stub but the guy had everything on file already :)

  11. Hi everyone!

Just wanted to share my interview experience with you all to ease your minds and let you know what to somewhat expect.

Yesterday, I had my AOS interview. I came here in August under the VWP. I originally planned to stay here for a week, and then decided to get married, as a lot of you on here did too. My husband and I met online and this was our first time meeting! Our interview was scheduled for 8:00 AM in Boston at the JFK building. We arrived there around 15 minutes before our interview, it was very easy to find, and we had to go through security which only took about a minute - no problems. Then we went to the reception and gave in our interview notice and the lady was nice and told us to take a seat. Now here is a funny story! A woman started calling out a few names and told them to follow her in to another room (I later found out they were all there for naturalization). My husband and I could have sworn that the lady called out my maiden name and something that sounded like my first name so we followed her. My maiden name is two words and the last word is what she called out - it's a very unusual surname. Then about 10 minutes later, a man called out that same woman's name and that's when we realized we were in the wrong room so we went back and explained to the receptionist what had happened hahaha! She was nice and checked that we hadn't been called out yet, which we hadn't, so she told us again to take a seat. This was at 8:00 AM promptly.

Then about 5 minutes later, a man opened the door and came up to us and said our names (I guess he knew our faces because he had our photos) and wanted to interview my husband first. His interview lasted about 30 minutes and then they both came back in to the reception and my husband was smiling so I could tell that the officer had been nice to him and that everything was going to be fine. So then I went with the officer and when I went in to his room, he told me to stand up with my right hand up and swear on the oath which I did. When I sat down, he had a few photos of us that we brought with us on the table, the first photo being of us with our cat which he mentioned and I laughed. Then he started asking me if I was born in England, did I go to school there (and mentioned that my parents were both teachers from my birth certificate) and what did I study there, so I told him I did my A-levels in English Literature, Maths and French and he said "oh yes, (husband's name) told me that you like Shakespeare" and during the interview, he would talk to me about Shakespeare and how he likes Shakespeare lol! He showed me a photo we took in of us two with his nephew and asked who the boy was - I guess to see if our answers matched up, which they did, and he asked me where my sister-in-law (his nephew's mother) lived so I told him and he smiled because our answers matched up. Then he joked about how I must be familiar with English names in New England! Then he asked us how we met and I explained that we met online on a live-streaming website and used Skype too. Then he asked how we decided to meet in person so I told him it was easier for me to go over there seeing as I had a passport and I love America and then I explained, even though he didn't ask, that I originally came here for 8 days but we decided to stay and get married and we both laughed. He asked me how my family felt about it so I told him the truth; that there were ups and downs and I still don't really talk to much of my family but I email my mother and she was worried at first but now she is okay. Somehow he knew my parents were divorced and said it must have been a painful experience for me. He was a very sympathetic guy. Then he went through the questions on the I-485 form, which I all said "no" to. He asked if I've ever been fingerprinted by the police before which I have, not because of a crime, but because I had to do so in order to apply for an Iranian passport (my father is Iranian), so I mentioned this to him. He asked if I have an Iranian passport so I said I think it's expired now but it's in England and he asked me what the purpose for my visit in Iran was and I said just to see family and the country. He was typing stuff in to his computer at this point and then he stamped "APPROVED" on my paperwork and said I will be getting a welcome letter in the mail within two weeks and my GC within a month! I thanked him. He told me that my husband and I seem like a great couple and we had a quick romance haha! Then he followed me back to the reception and told my husband to make sure my name is on the mailbox for when I receive my green card, I guess so that they know for sure that I live there? I don't know.

Anyway, I'm so happy we had him as an officer! I wish I could have thanked him more for his kindness. My husband and I left and we were hugging each other and he had tears in his eyes because he was so happy hehe :) my interview lasted around 20 minutes or so.

  12. In the letter for my interview, it says I need to bring all documentation establishing my eligibility for Lawful Permanent Residency. I came here on a VWP and got married, so does this mean I bring my marriage certificate? Do I need to bring anything else to prove my eligibility? Of course, my husband's birth certificate to prove that he is American. Is that all?

  13. I haven't been able to apply for an SSN since getting my EAD a month ago (due to my husband not being able to get time off work this month as it closes at 3 and he gets off at 5 and the nearest place is 30 minutes away and I have no license yet to drive there) however next week we will be in Boston for our interview and I was wondering can I apply for a SSN over there in an SSA office over there or do I have to apply in the nearest office?

  14. SSA officer will not tell you what your SSN number is :)

you have almost a month to get your SSN since you have your EAD with you so you and your spouse could open a joint account once you get the SSN.

my spouse always told me that he believe that the main thing uscis will see as the evidence is our marriage certificate. But it's a good thing too to provide as much as we can as the proof.

good luck on the interview :)

Thank you :) but if we don't get a joint bank account in time, does it matter if we only have photos? I heard for some people, getting an SSN can take a few months.

  15. I have my AOS interview coming up on May 6th. I am really worried because I don't think we have enough evidence to prove that we have a bona fide marriage. When we sent off our application, we included copies of cards people sent us when we got married, a copy of a birthday card from me to him when I was in England and a sworn affidavit (his mother). Because I had no SSN, we could not open up a joint bank account and I am not on any lease as we don't pay rent (we live with my MIL at the moment).

I just recently got my EAD and I'm going to apply for an SSN very soon. I know it takes up to 2 weeks for me to receive my SS card, but will the people at the office be able to tell me what my SSN number is BEFORE I receive the card? I'm worried that we will not be able to get a joint bank account in time for the interview because they gave us quite an early date and if we don't have one by then, I'm not sure what else we can bring to the interview apart from photos of us to prove that we have a bona fide marriage.

EDIT: For Valentine's Day, we got 2 key chains of a heart split in to 2 with his name on one heart and my name on the other lol do you think we could bring those with us to the interview?
