Thanks for the confirmation. To clarify, I wasn't looking for advice on Facebook. We're done with our immigration process. It just came up in a conversation about another country's immigration system, and I wanted to make absolutely sure I was right before making a point of contradicting it.

Someone on a Facebook group just tried to tell me that it's no longer possible to immigrate to the US without help from a lawyer. I know that when we did it, the consensus for most situations was that it was better to do it yourself if you could read instructions carefully. Has anything actually changed, has it always been true for certain types of visas, or is that person just completely wrong?

Ah, never mind my last question - I just got the letter (online) with the oath ceremony date! The scheduling happened yesterday, and the ceremony is set for July 11, 2018 - wow, exciting!

Update: It was fine. We crossed from Belize to Mexico about two months before the expiration of my wife's I-551 stamp. The staff at that particular border crossing were confused about the stamp in general - they kept asking if it was her "visa". Once she said yes, they let her in. They didn't say anything about the expiration date on it.

Crossing from the US into Mexico at the Cancun airport, a couple months earlier, was no problem at all - they'd seem the stamp before.

She is a citizen of Taiwan, so she requires the green card to be able to enter Mexico visa-free (normally Taiwanese citizens have to apply for a visa in advance to go to Mexico).

Update on our case - if someone could add it to the table for me, that would be great (e-filing section):

I don't recall ever receiving an e-notice that we were in line for scheduling, but our interview was scheduled on 2/28/18 for an interview date of 4/12/18. HOWEVER, because of a combination of work and family travel plans, we requested that the interview be rescheduled until after June 8. They sent us a new scheduling letter on 5/3/2018, for an interview date of 6/11/2018. She PASSED the interview, and is now waiting to hear back about the oath date. They approved our I-751 on the same day.

I'm not sure how you want to show that on the table - it doesn't matter to me. My signature shows a few more details of the process.

By the way, rescheduling the interview was no problem. A little scary, because they just sent us an "interview canceled" letter, then waited to reschedule the new one until five or six weeks before our requested date range. But they didn't seem to mind at all, or think it was any big deal.

Sorry for failing to update you guys on our progress - ours was approved on June 11, 2018 (could someone add that to the table for me?).

Our N-400 naturalization interview had already been scheduled by the time most of your guys's cases started being approved, and an officer at InfoPass basically told us that they weren't going to bother with our ROC case until the N-400 appointment.

Sure enough, when we went to the N-400 appointment in June (after having rescheduled it from April), the officer promised to approve the ROC later that day, after approving her for naturalization. A few days later we received the letter confirming that the ROC had been approved on that day.

Hi - sorry for the slow reply! Hope I'm not too late.

There is no fee for the I-551 stamp, and yes, they give it during the InfoPass appointment (assuming they decided to give you the stamp at all).

I think they may decline to give her the stamp now, and instead tell you to come back closer to June (the green card expiration date) - unless you're leaving the country within a month from now and not returning until after the expiration in June. I don't know much about the I-327, but I would guess that doesn't affect whether they give you the I-551 or not (though you probably need to get the I-327 renewed, I guess!).

In principle, you shouldn't need to prove your reason for overseas travel - we just told them the truth, that we were going on vacation. Green card holders are allowed to travel out of the country for almost any reason as long as they don't stay away for more than a year - though I guess if they already advised you to get the I-327, it doesn't hurt to have an explanation ready.

I think the main way to make your case is to convince them that something is happening within the next 30 days after your InfoPass that will require your wife to have proof that she isn't losing her legal residency in June. As I mentioned, a single overseas trip lasting from April through June might do it. Or if by chance she needs to renew her driver's license within the next 30 days, you should definitely bring that up too. And if you can think of any other reason that someone will look at her green card in April (within 30 days after your InfoPass) and deny her some privilege because it's expiring soon, make sure to mention it. Some reasons might not be good enough for them, but it's always worth a try.

Is it possible the people who got their cases "transferred to a new office" are ones whose N-400 applications are making progress, hence the ROC case being transferred to the same local office to be dealt with simultaneously?

Has anyone here traveled to Mexico on an I-551 stamp that's within 3 months of expiration?

I understand from this thread that a valid passport and the I-551 stamp is considered enough to enter Mexico visa free (though I won't be surprised at all if it takes a little convincing). However, forum posts online from ten years ago mention that the proof of residency has to be valid for 3 months from the time of entry - citing a Mexican government web page that doesn't exist anymore. I can't find any such requirement anywhere on any of the current websites, but it would be nice to have confirmation that it's not an issue from someone who's tried it.

That's what I've heard too, for very busy offices. But for anyone who hasn't tried at all yet, I'd say go ahead and first try it whenever it's convenient for you. Many less-busy offices, like ours in Portland, OR, have appointments available in the system all the time.

I assumed, perhaps naively, that my application would have processed by then, but I spoke to USCIS this afternoon and was informed that my field office (California) is currently processing applications from August, 2016!! This suggests that there's a considerable backlog

I agree with nightingalejules. I would bring proof of travel arrangements if you have it, especially if your Infopass appointment is before May 20th (30 days before your I-797 expires). I might wait for an appointment after May 9th (30 days before your trip), but it's always possible they could approve the stamp earlier if you have proof you'll need it.

If your appointment's after May 20th, I think they'll probably give you the stamp regardless of whether you have travel plans or not. Though you still might as well bring evidence if you have it, just in case.

Yep, you should be fine. If anyone gives you any trouble at immigration (unlikely), insist that the letter is valid until a year after the GC expiration date, and they'll soon realize you're right.

Where do we find our ECD?

Also, could someone add NBC/IOE to the Legend? I would do it myself, but I don't actually know what it means.

We just submitted our N-400 online. Anyone else not able to upload PDF files (even though it says you can)? Had to convert all our documents into JPGs.
