But...why? Why do we accept that something is right just because it's always been that way. I want a reason for my rules.
As human beings, as a society, we learn, we progress, we make changes based on new ideas. That's a good thing, in my opinion.

There are plenty of third world, stuck in the stone age countries, that only allow marriage between a man and a woman, or think it's primary purpose is to birth children. I'd rather live in the westernized world that's moved beyond that thinking.

Do you foresee the consensus culture approving of something like that?
If you do, I'd suggest you misunderstand the cultural drivers behind the current value shift in favor of gay marriage.

I'll be honest. I'm having trouble following what you're saying.
But I don't really care what the "function and definition" of marriage was in 1800. We've come a long way since then, thank goodness. I wouldn't want to go backwards.
We generally agree in this country that discrimination based on sexual orientation is wrong. Why should marriage be any different?
I'll say again, I haven't heard one compelling reason why gay people should not be allowed to get married.

    Isn't it a value judgment?
At one time the consensus culture was that interracial marriage was a no-no.
That changed slowly and eventually a critical mass of pro-interracial marriage people existed and the laws changed. It was disruptive but it only happened because the cultural change necessary to make it happen had already occurred to a sufficient extent.
The same is true for gay marriage today. There is a cultural shift underway and Danno is stuck on the old side of this shift. One day, critical mass will be achieved in this country and gay marriage will become just part of the marriage landscape the way interracial marriage is today.
One wonders what the next cultural shift will be.

In the end it doesnt matter. I have my private boycotts as well so every dollar they don't get, is a dollar that goes towards their competition. The important thing is that you know you decide who gets your money. There is a reason some business go farther than others so don't underestimate the power of being true to your principles.
You may be silent but you're not alone.

Protests are one of the ways that we make things change in this country. I roll my eyes at a lot of them because I find their cause to be stupid, but I support their right to do it.
I don't participate in protests mostly because I'm not "that type" and most things don't inspire me enough to put the time and energy into them. But I'm glad there are people who do.
I personally won't ever spend my money chick-fil-a because of their anti-gay views. I also don't ever give money to the boy scouts, and I won't shop at Leatherby's ice cream. I don't want my money being used to finance discriminatory agendas.
They will probably never know how much money they lose because of people like me - the quiet ones. And it probably won't even hurt them. But at least I know that I attempt to live the principles I claim to believe in.

I'm not in this situation as my husband has never had an interest in living in the US, heck we'd stay in Moscow if we could.
What I've noticed here is a few patterns: a. old hot guy brings a tight-bodied girl he could've fathered or grandfathered, then gets pissed off that she doesn't want him or is a golddigger b. arranged marriage failures (I'm not against them, just saying what I've seen) c. American person gets duped by someone from the developing world who is from a culture that is rife with poverty and lack of opportunities or has a very anti-women/religious/etc culture where love comes secondary to necessity. Of course it can be a combination of a few of these, or something different.
What does irk me is people who quickly call "scam" on a marriage/engagement that simply dissolved. A big problem with the US immigration system is that unless you live abroad with your partner or he/she is from a VWP country, you have very, very little time physically together, so then when you actually live together things might be very different than what you thought they'd be, so you fall out of love. I don't think that's a "scam", I think that's simply an unfortunate consequence of a very unfair process that puts a strain on even the best and strongest relationships.

In my case, it mattered more who left the house, not who filed first. We were told no one was allowed to remove things from the house without the consent of both parties. He wouldn't consent to me taking anything (he thought that would keep me around) so I left empty handed. Even though I was the one who filed first, I never did get much of anything. Fine with me though. At least I'm happy now.
And your post made me smile, Gowon.

I see I didn't encourage you then either: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/368365-im-ashamed-of-myself-for-quitting-my-first-jobi-need-uplifting-words/page__view__findpost__p__5387516

Let me quote myself (from one of those many threads you started)
No, I won't be congratulating you. Not until you say thank you to everyone who tried to help you, and offer some help to the many others who are still trying to get through this. Not until you express some sort of sympathy and understanding to the people who have had brutal interviews and are left waiting in limbo to hear a decision.
Some understanding on your part of how very lucky you are might make those "meanies" who told you they didn't think you had enough evidence say "congratulations."
