Well, make sure he understands that if you have to sponsor a new petition for him in the future, when he is over 21 or married, it will take much longer. Beyond that there’s not really anything you can do.  I mean, I understand him, my dad first sponsored me in my early 20s. He didn’t tell me he was doing it, just did it, and when it came time to interview I didn’t go because it really didn’t suit me at the time. Even though I am now in the US,  the choice I made at that time was right. Not everyone wants to move to the US as soon as they can, especially if they have a comfortable life, good social circle, good job or whatever is subjectively important to them. He’s an adult and needs to make his own decisions.

You can’t force a person to migrate if they don’t want to... this is something that should have been considered by you when filing and throughout the entire process... you may need to speak with him about the implications of not attending (denial) and what happens if he’s denied... e.g. you need to choose stay or go maybe I guess a big factor he is your sons age? Ex partner?

If the visa is for him, and he does not attend interview, it will be denied.  Your son is over 21??? He does not have to come.

Similar to our case. In fact, my immigrant husband’s 16 y.o. attended the interview for CR2 visa but refused to go to USA. He received the visa but never used it.  Lots of paperwork, time and money wasted. Oh well.
