  1. Listen,

you will NEVER have to show your SS card to anybody as long as you live. I haven't shown mine to anybody in over 20 years. All that matters is that you have a SSN, and that you'll need all the time. So don't worry too much about the cardboard card, as you don't need it. You can't work without an EAD or Green Card anyway, so what difference does it make if you have the card in your drawyer or not? Imprint your SSN into your brain, and that's all you'll ever need.

I know lol, we noted the original SS# down while we were at the office just incase. Thankyou

  2. Okay, so here is my issue.

After a somewhat hard time I got my SS# card about 5/6 weeks ago and around 3 weeks ago, went back to SS to have the name changed on it to my new married surname. The lady took all of my details/documents and kept my SS# Card.

This morning, I received a call from the SS Office telling me that I am "out of status" re; my I-94 (my k1 lasted 90 days until December 25th) even though I had already been issued a SS# Card and was married well within the 90 days.....what is the problem here? I only wish to change my surname on the SS# Card!?

Not to mention I wasted 6 weeks waiting for the issue of the 1st SS# Card because the office didnt inform me that there was a problem unitl I actually went back to the office myself to find out why it hadnt been mailed out yet!!!

She said I have to visit immigration and have my "status updated", how and where do I do this? (I'm in Staten Island, NYC)

    Thankyou for any help

  3. It's a CBP error so they should fix it. Just call the Passenger Service Manager for CBP-Newark. (973) 368-6000

They will tell you where/how it can be fixed. Perhaps a new I-94 and submission by them, correcting your entry status. If you connected to another city it can be fixed at the CBP location nearest you. It may be an office building somewhere and not even the airport, so best to call first.

AOS: could be an RFE if they notice the I-94 doesn't match the K1 status you are applying under. They could send the whole packet back, but you will just re-send it with a new or corrected I-94. Could be it won't get noticed until the adjudicator works on your case a couple of months from now. Or maybe nobody will notice. I don't really know but it's fixable with little delay.

Hi, just to update and let you know, we went back to Newark on Monday (times are between 8.30am and 11.00am for anyone that's interested) and the CBP Officer fixed the issue on their system.

We then went right back to Social Security and tried again for another SS# so, fingers crossed, all will be fine this time and I should receive my SS Card in a couple of weeks from now.

Thank you so much for your excellent advice as always.

Ok, thank you, I will try giving that number a call tomorrow nich-nick & keep you posted.

    Happy Thanksgving :)

  5. Your entry is recorded in a database off the I-94 you fill in. Either USCIS made a typo entering it or the officer at POE wrote B1 on your I-94 by mistake and that's how it got in the database. Look at your portion of the I-94 and see if it was a CBP error or USCIS. Maybe the CBP officer had bad handwriting and K1 looked like B1 on their portion of the I-94.

    Hiya Nich-Nick!

I have just checked my 1-94 and you are quite correct in what you have said, the officer's handwriting DOES infact look like "B" instead of a "K". Should we make a trip back to Newark Airport and ask to speak to an Officer there before my appointment with the Department of Homeland Security (on 7th december)?

I just mailed off all of my AOS paperwork this morning also, will this issue affect the processing of my AOS too? :crying:

Thank you so much for your guidance.

  6. I applied for my ss# on October 17th which they said could take upto 4 weeks to receive, so today (almost 5 weeks later) we went back to the social security office where I applied and were told "The DHS has checked my documents 3 times and I cannot be issued a SS# as their system says I am a B1 Visa" (even though the lady at social security took photocopys of my K1 visa directly from my passport).

She told us we will have to go to the Department of Homeland Security Offices to try to sort this out.

Has anyone else had the same issue with regard to their k-1 visa and applying for a social security number?

So annoying that they didn't inform me via letter or something alot earlier!!

    thankyou

  7. A number I've explained.

As for SSN.. as a K1 you're eligible for a SSN. You have until December 11 to apply (you need to apply before the 76th day you've been here). Go to the SSA tomorrow and apply. The guide is here: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

If they try and tell you you're ineligible they're wrong. Make sure you ask to speak to a supervisor. If the supervisor says you're not eligible ask for his/her name then call the SSA 1800 number. Give them the details of the office that you're at and ask them to call the supervisor to tell them they're wrong.

They may only let you get it in your maiden name. If that's the only way to get one then get it in your maiden name. You can change it later and having it in maiden name doesn't affect your AOS in ANY way.

Hi, thanks for that, i already applied for ss# on 17th of october, im still waiting to receive it.

  8. So today, 3 weeks after entry into USA, I went to Social Security office and applied for my Social Security Number :D

The process was a breeze, the lady didn't even ask me any questions, although I did go prepared with the documents from

    http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Arrived at the Staten Island office at 8.15am for 8.30am opening. We waited for around 10-15mins unitl my number was called and around 10mins for the lady to process my details, she then gave me a receipt and told me that all being well I should receive my Social Security Number/Card in 2-3weeks. Left the Office at 9.15am :D Another step completed on the VJ!!

Busy week now, this upcoming week, preparing for our long awaited Wedding at the end of the month. :P Shopping for the rings tomorrow (L)

  9. Hi, I was just adding to my timeline at the Port of Entry part and noticed a place to add the date for "Got EAD Stamp" ....can anyone tell me what this stamp is?

(The only thing I can think is that it's the stamped I-94...?)

    Thank you as usual

  10. Finally, the day is here. Im approved! Thankyou so much vj, could not have done this without the site. Will be using it for aos so ill still be around. A big thankyou to everyone who has helped me in any small way on here. Will post a review when I get home

Congratulations, Best Wishes to you both. :luv:

  11. Hope you have a good trip! Make sure they staple the I-94 into your passport. They forgot to give me mine and it is a pain in the butt to fix!!

Thank you, I've read about quite a few people having problems with that.

  12. It's been three and a half weeks now. We sent it August 25. I'm now calling DOS daily to see if they have record of it. So far they still don't. They said at the four week mark (this Thursday) we should consider it lost and mail another. I hate this. I really wanted him here by Halloween. And I want to get married 11/11. That way we don't have to argue about whose dates are right! Grumble.

    That's all. Just grumble.

My advice is the same as "rugby guys". The same thing happened to me after 6 weeks of waiting, we resubmitted Packet 3 and called the Embassy the same day explaining our situation and they gave us the Email Code.

They replied to our email 2/3 days later with an Interview Date.

    :luv:

  13. Going to the embassy to morrow. Any other vjers have the same interview date? Any last minute advice would be greatly appreciated

Yay!! The best piece of advice I can give you is simply to be honest.

Look forward to hearing your story

    Good Luck :luv:

  14. I just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to all the VJ'ers who have helped me along my journey. You know who you are.

This website has been a godsend and I will carry on using it for my AOS etc.

I will be continuing to regularly log in to read the forums (which I really enjoy) and trying to help others if I can.

    thankyou.gif

Thank you so much VJ we really couldn't have done it without you!!! :luv:
