  1. I'll be in New York City. Which is weird because my fiance currently lives in Texas (well I guess currently he's in Australia with me but you know what I mean) We met in Texas, I've lived there for a year and gone back from two 3 month trips but now he's finished his PhD and gotten a job at NYU we're moving there. I feel like all my traveling to America has been useless coz I'm still going to be in a new strange place when I finally move there for good! :P Oh well. I've been to NY twice, but only for a few days just on random road trips we took. It's a bit scary, but mostly exciting, New York is like just one of those places that everyone seems to want to be! I guess I'll get to explore quite a bit in the next three years :-s

I'll be nearby NYC, we're living in Westchester County in NY, but my hubby-to-be works at DOL in Federal Plaza, so I guess I'll have some time to explore the surroundings there as well... maybe some day we can hang out lalaalexandra  btw I'm also Alexandra

  2. How long does the K-3 Visa process take? Is it something we need to apply for now? Or something we apply for once we get married in September?

If you want to apply to a k-3 you will need to do it AFTER you are married. But if you got married in the US before her visa expires, the only thing you need to do is apply for her Adjustment of Status as your wife, she doesn't need to leave

  3. And she knows several friends who have done the same thing but did not need to return to the country for that two-year period. I am sorry, I have tried as much research on my own, but it is still so confusing to me...

Based on reading, it sounds like once the visa is expired, they must return to the home country for two years, regardless of whether or not they are getting married, which seems kind of ridiculous to me... At least three or four of her friends were J-1's, got married here and stayed here without ever going back.

    Thanks!!!!

We were hoping to get married just a little later for planning purposes... but is there a big difference between the marriage and fiancee visa? I was thinking once the fiancee visa is approved, I know you have three months to get married, and we were just hoping for a little additional time for planning and such, as mentioned... but if necessary, I have no doubt she is the one I want to marry, so that part isn't an issue.

There is some difference between fiance and wife visa, most of them are for time estimates to get it, but if your gf has the two-year period, you will have to wait no matter what.

I think getting married is a viable option for you since she has a high probability for that two-year period. I had a friend (no here on VJ) but she went to the US with a J-1 Visa, and she got married, she never leaved, now she already has her Conditional Residence... You still have some time until September to plan a nice wedding...

Best wishes for both of you

  4. ppl call to get there case numbers and stuff so they can give their emails and there loved ones and so they can pay online instead of waiting for everything via snail mail..by doing that you are adding weeks to your wait..

From what I've heard you can also write them an email to: NVCINQUIRY@state.gov You can put something like this if you wanna know your case number:

MY NAME IS XXXXXX XXXXXXXXX AND MY BIRTH DATE IS JUNE 11, XXXX . MY CASE NUMBER WAS EACXXXXXXXXXX PETITION FOR FIANCEE, AND MY PETITIONER IS XXXXX XXXXXXXXXX AND HIS BIRTH DATE IS OCTOBER 25, XXXX, WE RECEIVE OUR APPROVAL NOTICE ON XXXXX, THEY INFORMED US THAT MY BENEFICIARY NUMBER IS AXXX PLEASE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW TO MY NEW CASE NUMBER AND WHEN YOU WOULD SEND IT TO (your embassy)

They respond you in a couple of days if you do this

    Best wishes

  5. I totally agree! How would we do it? We could have a new March Filers thread in another forum...there's Moving Here and Your New Life In America, or even Off-Topic. We could post photos for each other and stuff. :)

That's a good idea! After we all get approved we should move to another forum here
