Hope everyone is staying safe and well.

I am in the AOS process from a K1 visa, and I just received my combo card.

Before I moved to the US, I was living in the UK and working as a contractor in the consulting industry. The pay is very lucrative as a contractor in my field of work and I was making 2x the amount I make on a regular salary so I was only working for 6 months. I would now like to go back into this because of the flexibility and time off, but am seeing far fewer opportunities in the US (I think due to health insurance etc, it's not as common for people to do contracting here? but I may be wrong and it may be due to the fact that I have a great recruiter network in the UK).

A 3 month UK-based contract has come up and I was wondering to what extent can I go back and work in the UK? I would ideally go for a month, come back and work remote for a few weeks to spend time with my husband, and go back for the final month. A lot of the work is remote now, but I don't want to work the time difference (which would mean starting work at 4am).

My fear is that we haven't done our AOS interview yet, and I don't want it to seem like I don't have the intention to live in the US, and am somehow using the greencard as a glorified visa. If that makes any sense?

We plan to have kids in 2 years, so I would only be doing this flying back and forth for a year or 2 max.

Firstly I hope this is in the right topic and apologies if it s not. I received my green card today!! We had our interview last week and I asked the lady if I d be able to get my green card in my new married name (because I had forgotten to change my name when adjusting status) and she did, so my green card is in my new married name, which is great! My question is, what next? From what I ve seen I need to first change my name with the social security office to get it changed on my SS card, they re closed because of covid so to do this I would have to mail it which could take weeks and also mean sending original documents which I hate the idea of. I also need to get my permit ASAP because I have to have it 6 months before taking my driving test, I assume though I ll just have to wait a few extra weeks to get this until I have sent my SS off and got this changed? Lastly because it s tax time and obviously everything like my W2s, social security number etc are all in my maiden name, I don t want to change the name with social security yet if it ll mess anything with that up? I haven t filed my taxes yet. Basically I just don t want to do anything wrong and want to know the best way on getting my name changed on everything. Thanks!

P85 queries

Bug&Bug

Hello!

I think this one is a question for HMRC but now they are not even putting me on hold just "we are busy bye". So maybe Im lucky and some of you know the answer to this.

Im going to continue to work remotely for my UK employer for few months ( under 6 months) while in the US under my current contract, so I will not be receiving a P45 before I leave the UK.

1. Should I wait to complete the P85 until I finish my UK employement? I cant see anywhere in the instructions about my particular case.

2. I assume if i wait to submit the P85 I will continue to pay national insurance and wont be able to claim it back. Is this right?

3. And does the US recognise the national contributions paid in the UK and other european countries and if yes what do I need to do?

My UK employer are absolutely hopeless when it comes to getting information on taxes ( or anything HR related for that matter) its been more than a month and they still cant give me any answers so I have given up with them.

So any insight will be helpful. Thanks!

When can we expect an update on our case post-interview?

Hello,

So my wife and I had the interview for her I-485 last Wednesday. We were not explicitly told whether the application was approved or not at the end, but we were told that if we did end up in interviewing when filing the I-751 that we should handle it like we did that one because we were "perfectly" organized and attentive which seems like a good sign.

The IO told us we should expect an update to her status in a week. From a FB group we are in, it seems that the Milwaukee field office usually approves the application within a few days after interview (the longest recent wait I have seen in that group was 6 days). We have not yet received an update (we are now the longest interview-to-status-update wait in the aforementioned FB group).

So I wanted to know what is normal? Also, if we end up outside of "normal" for post-interview wait eventually, what ways can we contact USCIS to get our case figured out?

The other thing that might put a twist on our situation is that we changed her name on the application during the interview. My wife has been going by her married name, however we did not realize we could use that name when filling out the I-485 packet. The IO allowed us to change it so the green card would have her married name. I am not sure if this is part of the issue.
