In the DS-230,

question # 23, Course of Study means what? The subject? Like Math or Philosophy? Or is it something different?

Should I also put a regular primary/secondary/high school education there?

Thanks a lot

question # 23, Course of Study means what? The subject? Like Math or Philosophy? Or is it something different?

This question also put me off. It was rather complicated. What I personally did was to put what I officially studied under "course of study" and what degree or diploma I got under "degree or diploma".

For example:

I put Natural Sciences under "course of study" and High school diploma under "degree or diploma" as my first entrance. I didnt put anything about primary/secondary school since I tought that it was not what they asked for. During my high school years I majored in natural scinences precisely in math, chemistry and physics.

As my second entrance under "course of study" i put Social sciences and Bachelor's degree under "degree or diploma" as I majored in political science. As my third entrance i put Social sciences and Master's degree as I majored in political science but it was officially under a social science degree. As my fourth entrance I put Bachelor's degree and Economic sciences as I majored in marketing that was counted as that.

As my fifth and sixth entrance I was thinking about putting Master's degree in Economic science as i majored in economics that whent under the economic science title and then Bachelor's degree in Engineering. However since I haven't gotten these papers in my hand yet (even if they are technically done or almost done) I decided to leave them out since they are not "educational institutions attended" but "educational institutions attending".

I personally thought that that question was extremely confusing and I was totally unsure what to do so I just looked up my tittles from the official papers and put what they said. You can probably ask your university how your own degree's translate into English and then put all those translations there. I hope this helps somewhat :).

On the flipside, for my Husband's DS-230 we did include his primary school - 23. List below all educational institutions attended.

I'm not sure if you meant - about primary school - if you just didn't include it Stabu? Or if you meant under 'degree' for primary school you entered N/A?

I focused on the "all"..so I put all of them, begining with the earliest (like in a resume)..and added an attachment supplement for the rest...I decided so, because i've studied in a few countries, so that they decide what to do with it...

I'm not sure if you meant - about primary school - if you just didn't include it Stabu? Or if you meant under 'degree' for primary school you entered N/A?

Well I didn't put it at all. I know from previously reading these forums that not everyone had chosen to put primary school in there and I have never heard of anyone having any problems with it. My wife said that even high school was useless in the form but I decided to put it there anyway. In general I think that what they are primary interrested in is your human capital and if you pose a possible terrorism threath (like if you say you come from a Middle-Eastern country and have studied say nuclear physics). I just couldn't understand what use it would be to include primary school. It would be extremely problematic for those who've moved a lot around when they where kids, since during a ten year time frame it is possible to attend even a dozen of different primary schools... and you would need to include them all? I mean, it just sounds silly, but then again this process is silly too . I dunno, these forms are rather vague from time to time, for me the most problem was if I should include the educational institutions that I'm currently attending. If I would the list would become extremely long, so thus I chose to put the info which I think would be mostly usefull for them.

The same with the language cathegory. There's only room for six languages and you're supposed to include "all languages spoken or read". You can't fit everything in there! So I chose to include the six I'm best at, since I thought it was useless to say that "I also know the the Cyrillic alphabet and have studied two years Russian" when I know that my skills in Russian are at beginners level at most, I can't even order food properly in Russian. I mean, it's just that what's the point? I already did an attachment where I wrote in all the dates of my privious visits to the US which i tought was important, but I didn't include things that I found to be unimportant.

The same goes with the military experience. There was only room for one date but i added another one regarding when my military ended. I wouldn't include any re-recruted dates (which I actually don't have but which are extremely common in Finland), if you would you could easily get a list with even ten beginning and ending dates.

Also in the previous work places I only included those that lasted months and which where official. I'm currently working on a project and thus helping to build up a public policy research institute but I chose not to include it there, since it's inofficial so far and thus there's no address or equal to include. In the same manner I don't include some two week summer jobs that included like painting a house or picking berrier or equal.

My view on the forms was more or less that they want the information that is relevant to them. If you would really go about including every little bit of information required in the form you could easily get attachments to every single question and that just doesn't sound right to me .

I may be totally wrong but this is how I thought about it, what do you others think ?

I agree with you, while they may have wanted every single school he attended (who knows!?) we didn't include each and every one - he couldn't even remember all of them as they moved around a lot. We basically included the ones where he spent most of his school time :)
