Transcripts evaluation

Hey everyone

I got my french transcripts evaluated by Education Credentials Evaluators and after waiting a long time and doing most of the work myself (like contacting the universities and word-to-word translation) i finally got the results this week.

It was NOT what i expected. In France i got a master's degree in education (with honor) and a bachelor's degree in an asian language.

This organization gave me the lowest GPA score possible and said that ALL my degrees were the equivalent of a bachelor of arts with a major in foreign language and a minor in education...

Do you guys think i was robbed? I feel like all my hard work was put in the trash! :(

Did some of you go through this kind of situation? Is there a way to fix this?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

It's not a 'fair' system - I've known practicing doctors who have had to return to medical school once they arrived here in the US. And different 'Evaluation' companies will give different results. :protest:

Did you get your diploma(s) evaluated for educational purposes or work-related/professional reasons?

Hi thank you for your fast reply!

Professional reasons. I need to get a teaching certification to resume teaching here in the US.

Do you think i should get my transcripts evaluated by some other companies?

My husband and i were really surprised to learn that absolutely no official governmental institution evaluate transcripts here. Only private companies that don't even contact the universities to check/verify the information you provided...

We are really disappointed.

I'd just get a second opinion from WES, as much of a PITA as that might be.

I've read really bad reviews of WES.. Did you deal with them?

Nah, also through ECE, but my husband was only doing it to get into university here (an evaluation for Abitur/uni transcript-no degree). I was a little confused too at the evaluation, but because they evaluated everything that could have a possibility to transfer to two hours, which is basically useless. My husband was not a good student until...well, the past year, so I wasn't too surprised by the evaluated GPA. It wasn't disastrous though because my husband didn't want to study the same thing here at all and most of those courses he had at his German uni were program specific.

Most people complain about evaluation services lowering the GPA, sometimes by massive amounts. Some people got better results going somewhere else. You could try other services from here: http://www.naces.org/members.htm

Maybe others have experience with those other agencies?

my university wanted my high school transcripts!! yes, not the samer as you, but this company I used was excellent, very very fast! I had what i needed back, before they even cashed my check! http://www.educationinternational.org/procedure.htm

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I checked my state requirements for the evaluation of credentials and the professional teaching standards board of Wyoming accepts evaluations from the following companies:

American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers

Education Credentials Evaluators (the one i used)

Foundation For International Services, Inc.

International Education Research Foundation

Josef Silney & Associates, Inc. International Education Consultants

World Education Services, Inc.

Has anyone dealt with the above companies before?

flames9, thanks for your feedback! I'm going to contact that company!

I dealt with Joseph Silny & Co. Their conversion was accurate and I was interested to see what the American equivalency of my GPA would be: 3.75

My BA was recognised as was my post grad certificate. In addition, the Professional Standards Comission in GA recognized my CELTA certificate through Cambridge because of the transcripts done by Silny.

I highly recommend Silny & Co. (no 'e' in the Silny) but I never tried another company.

Good luck & seek a second evaluation.

You're welcome :)

I called the university of kansas before and they suggested WES, which doesn't mean they are good.

I got a different question. I always thought they would also do translations, but apperently I was wrong. Do you guys think I'd be better of having my transcripts translated here or in the US. My school here in germany has never been very cooperative and told me that they can't translate my transcripts. I don't know if I could do it myself or if a certified translator has to do it. I'd be thankful for any advise.

For ECE, you could do the translations yourself. I'm not sure about WES.
