Do you talk/write in the accent of your SO?

I don't think the OP meant writing in your SO's accent as much as copying his/her speech patterns - I find myself doing this in IM, dropping articles, simplifying verb conjugation/tenses('yesterday I buy' instead of 'yesterday I bought') and so forth. It makes the conversation flow better, anyway, quicker to write, lol I am also trying to learn Nepali so it's a mix of Nepali and 'Neplish'.

I could understand you doing that in IMs to your SO. But I've never seen you write things like that on this board.

well... I never thought I was trying to call attention to myself by using words that I just find amusing. I don't think I write in an accent when I use them, but if it makes me seem phony, I guess I won't use those words anymore... hmm

Perhaps surprisingly I don't speak with an American accent, despite being here for 4 years. Friends of mine who have visited haven't commented on it at any rate (though there is that whole thing about linguistic assimilation and adaptation).

As far as dialect goes - I do use certain American dialect words, in both speech and writing - really for reasons of expediency. Its too much of a hassle to explain what word X means to USCs and they invariably cause confusion, so its easier to use the local equivalents.

I don't write in an accent though, nor do I know anyone who does. I'd say that's pretty rare outside of Irvine Welsh novels

Actually I have two accents - a London/Essex accent for friends, and a more formal one for family and work. Its not a conscious switch though - most people adapt their modes of speech depending on who they're speaking with.

There's a diff in typing a slang word and typing in an accent.

I am generally against the use of arab words and phrases because I think its just kinda phony and as someone mentioned a ploy for attention BUT there are a few words and phrases I have found myself saying to the baby, particularly some soothing ones I've heard my husband say so much it sort of rolls out of my mouth. But no, I wouldnt use them in public or general conversation.

Borrowing slang isn't borrowing an accent though. Since accents are based on pronunciation, it involves phonetically altering the spelling, and since spelling is not standardized and not phonetic, it's forced and deliberate to take in an accent, and not genuine. A genuine accent takes years to form, and can change over time, and written English does not include the way we pronounce it. Most foreign immigrants aren't going to go out of their way to type the way they talk, just like I don't type "I took my dawwwwg for a waaaawwwwwwk in the park" even though I talk that way. Lots of factors overlap, but my whole point is that if you're typing/writing with an accent, it's forced and deliberate and not genuine, not just something that happens.

I do borrow slang from Spanish though. Carajo, some more vulgar words, feo/a. (Don't ask him if it's ugly, I ask, "Is this feo?" when I'm shopping.) These are jokes though.

There is no way I will ever intentionally speak with an American accent. I could get away with murder with this little puppy of a British accent, why would I want to change it?

Yes, I only do it when I am writing to him, not in other contexts. Likewise, when I am with Nepalis, I pick up their speech patterns but don't speak that way with other people.

I can’t stand the way that character talks, but strangely I find it rather less irritating than Boycie from Only Fools and Horses.
