I only had two wisdom teeth grow in. I had them removed about 6 yrs ago. They weren't impacted but one of them was crooked and was rubbing against the inside of my cheek. I just had novocaine. Pain afterwards was probably a 2 and it only lasted a day or so. Thank God no dry sockets or any complications. I was given a prescription for Tylenol 3 but only used a couple the first day. I saved the rest for future headaches and such.

My ex had all four of his removed about 9 years ago. They were all impacted and he had to have surgery to remove them. He was in excrutiating pain for almost a week. He was prescribed Vicodin for the pain and he took it.

Had all four of mine taken out about 10 years ago. All were impacted and starting to cause problems with my other teeth. Dentist didn't want to knock me out or let me listen to music because he wanted me alert enough to follow instructions. Anyway, he novocained me up to a fairthewell and I didn't feel a thing even with two dentists on either side of me pulling back and forth. Worst thing was the sound of my teeth breaking, shudder. :help:

Afterwards, I was pretty swollen and had this weird smile that made me look like the Joker for a few days. But fortunately no dry sockets and pain during that time was about a 2-3. I found that putting a damp tea bag on my gums reduced the swelling and bleeding.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out in 1977. I didn't have much money in those days, so I had them taken out by an oral surgeon in the dental chair under local anesthetic (aka: Novacaine). No laughing gas...no sedative...I was fully conscious the entire time. They would only do one side (2 wisdom teeth) in one sitting. The first set was on my right side and the bottom wisdom tooth was severely impacted. The surgeon got pretty rough to get it broken up and out of my mouth. After I got home it got swollen and wouldn't stop bleeding. I had to go back to the surgeon in the evening to have him restitch it and he also gave me Demerol for the pain. That ordeal was a 7 or 8 on the pain scale.

When I had to go back several weeks later to have the 2 wisdoms on the left side removed, I was dreading it big time. However, the left side was not as bad. I also had it done in the chair under local anesthetic. That one was a 5 on the pain scale.

My suggestion? If you have a weak stomach...better have it done completely knocked out. I did what I did because I was short on cash, but you might think about having all 4 done in a hospital while completely knocked out unconscious. That way you only go through the pain once instead of twice like I did and you don't have to hear all the noise while the surgeon breaks up the teeth to get them out.

mine are both completely in so hopefully it will be as nice and easy as possible. I hope I don't have to have the IV sedation because it makes me vomit. They said they will call me on Wednesday after they see my xrays to let me know

In 1983 Canada, IV was probably the only approach available.

I was alert enough after wake-up that I could have driven home (not allowed to though). Not especially painful, and I didn't have too much swelling either.

I too had four impacted wisdom teeth removed at the hospital under general anesthesia. I was 15 and had been having jaw pain and headaches as the teeth were forming. My older sister had hers removed two years earlier, and the oral surgeon said that hers was the worst case he'd ever seen in terms of the size of the teeth and how crowded her mouth was (we have similar dental situations, although mine was not quite as bad). Great!

I healed quickly, being so young, but I had the typical chipmunk look and couldn't close my mouth completely (that is, bottom teeth touching top teeth) for a solid week. I ate lots of soup and pudding. I remember that it hurt to walk up and down stairs--just that bit of motion. Ouch. I asked to keep the teeth, so the surgeon had them ready for me at the follow-up appointment. One had been broken into four pieces, and one split down the middle (by the pathologists, I assume). I still have them in a container. I'm a weirdo.

I had them out in October 1988 and remember watching Kirk Gibson's famous home run while zonked on pain meds.

Sorry, this post is getting really boring.

I suggest spending the extra money on general anesthesia, Novocaine, nitrous, epidural, morphine drip, etc.

Then again, I'm a wimp. :)

I had two impacted wisdom teeth pulled under a general. I would never have done it awake. Had little pain post procedure, but I had good pain meds.

I have all four of my wisdom teeth intact. Why pull them?

I have mind too

Glad to see I'm not the only one - they've come in funky but I haven't had any pain - so why bother?

The prevailing wisdom (hehehe) is if they don't bother you, don't pull 'em...easy as that. But many times funky grown-in teeth can crowd the others, causing misalingment of those teeth and possible pain down the road. Also, it's suppose to be less painful the younger you are. *shrug* And if a tooth comes up it can be so jammed in to the tooth next to it, that food can get caught, causing bacteria and possible infection.

Another perspective that my dentist gave me was that when you reach middle age, those teeth are going to be pulled due to decay etc. chances are.. so pull all 4 at one time when you are younger and can bounce back quicker makes sence. I was only required to pull one or two of them, but I got a good deal from the dentist (300$ total) and I figured better when i was in my teens then in my 50's!

I had 2 of my wisdom teeth removed 5 years ago. The one had come all the way in and the other one was impacted and infected, so they suggested i be put under. The upper one came out easy peasy, no problems at all, pain was like a 1. The impacted one was another story, since my nerves were so close to the roots, the pain after was immense :crying: On top of all that, i ended up getting dry socket, worst.pain.ever. I wouldnt wish dry socket on my worst enemy lol

To aid healing take arnica. I swear by this stuff for any dental work. I had 2 upper molars (next to wisdoms) removed for braces and with arnica did not feel a thing. The dentist was amazed cos he didn't even need to plug the hole -- it had stopped bleeding before I left the chair. 200c twice a day the day before, on the day, and the day after. Magic stuff.

I had all 4 of mine out in July of this year.... 2 of them were impacted and the dentist said that the other 2 were completely useless so if I was going to have those 2 out, I may as well have all of them out.

They knocked me out. There is NO WAY I would have done it awake!! I found it to be extremely painful... Mainly due to the fact that I got dry socket as I was really STUPID and continued to smoke  I also got a throat infection at the same time, so it was a pretty miserable week!

I had all four pulled when I was 17 because they were beginning to mess up the alignment of the rest of my mouth. Was put under, and I had minimal pain and swelling/bruising afterwards. I had the first softball practise of the year the next day, and the pain meds messed up my depth perception, which freaked my coach out because he was scared something had happened to mess up one of his co-captains -- I couldn't catch a fly ball that day to save my life :P
