Fallling down a cliff or getting hit by lightning will hardly be solved by pepper spray. And neither will get you raped. I repeat, you're pretty safe if you're alone.

Besides, aren't most rapes comitted by people the victim knows...? Logically we should booby trap our genitals (or pack heat, or whatever) when around people we know, and only let the guard down among strangers?

The danger that I was trying to point out is that however 'alone' you may believe yourself to be, danger can be lurking. Think about it in concrete terms. If you go to work, you leave your house to get into your car and while you may be 'alone', you aren't necessarily alone. The nature of predators is they look for easy targets and in the animal kingdom, they usually go for the stray animal. You are certainly better off if you have someone to go with - whether it's a quick trip at 8:30pm to the local grocery store or an early jog around your neighborhood block at 5:30am in the morning. While you may think you are alone, anyone can come into the picture of your quiet solitude and change that quickly, whereas, if you have someone else with you, there is less likely that should a rapist try do something, he'll get away with it. That's just common sense to me.
