Police arrested a Gilbert man Wednesday on suspicion of child endangerment after a 4-year-old boy shot himself in the arm.

Police determined Wednesday that the 24-year-old Leonardo Mendivil, the boy's mother's boyfriend, was handling the semi-automatic handgun and left it on the coffee table before the child shot himself in the left forearm with it Saturday, Gilbert police said.

Mendivil fled the house, on the 4600 block of East Redfield Road in Gilbert, after the shooting and currently had a felony warrant out, Lt. Eric Shuhandler of the Gilbert police said.

The boy sustained non-life threatening injuries and his mother and aunt took him to the hospital after the shooting.

He was released from the hospital, into the custody of Child Protection Services, but still requires extensive work, Shuhandler said.

Detectives had located and identified Mendivil Wednesday at an apartment near Mesa Drive and Brown Street in Mesa, when he left the apartment with his family, police said.

Mendivil then unknowingly led detectives to a gas station near Brown Street and Gilbert Road, where they tried to arrest him, but Mendivil refused to obey officer's commands, Shuhandler said.

Mendivil tried to run into the convenience store pulling a gun out of his front pants pocket, apparently intending to get in a shootout with officers, Shuhandler said.

Officers then deployed a Taser on Mendivil and took him into custody, police said.

Police booked Mendivil one count of suspicion of endangerment and one count of suspicion of prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm and the felony Superior Court warrant. He may face more charges following the police investigation.

This cat more than likely has been a #### up most of his life. It's just another notch in his belt. They have an empty bed waiting for him at the cross bar hotel. Home sweet home. Three hots and a cot.

Probably. I was just impressed with the way the police handled the situation. When he reached for the gun in his front pants, they tasered him. They could have laced his body with bullets, but then there would have been the mandatory internal investigation. They showed the benefits of having the taser. :)

Tasers can be beneficial if not abused.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

In the 1970's and 80's the "activists" b*tched about the Houston Police Department's shootings. Now they b*tch about the HPD taserings. It's funny how some things never change. ;)

In this case ... a shooting investigation is less expensive than long term incarceration ?
