AHMEDABAD: They were a band of ‘extra-social’ beings who were the boon and bane of every wedding, birth and other auspicious event in society. But come the mall boom and eunuchs of Ahmedabad have gone corporate! With economy booming and new malls, hyper-marts and mega-stores mushrooming, your neighbourhood ‘mausi’ who used to create a scene for that Diwali baksheesh is now busy extracting a pound of flesh from the corporate kitties instead!

Eunuchs are now striking gold, as high stakes of earning a one-time bonanza of Rs 10,000-30,000 ($250-$750) are luring senior mausis to every new mall and mega-store on the block. In fact, a random survey by TOI revealed that eunuchs are currently extracting an average Rs 25,000 ($625) from a newly opened mall, Rs 5,000 ($125) as Diwali bonus from an existing mega-mall and settle between Rs 1,000-5,000 ($25-$125) ( from mega-stores or super-stores.

Last week, a bunch of eunuchs swooped down on the bhoomi-pujan of the multi-crore Alpha One City Centre Mall near Vastrapur Lake and started demanding Rs 51,000 ($1275) for their blessings! Though the officials were not sure, the eunuchs knew exactly when and what time Big Bazaar was to be inaugurated at Shyamal Cross-roads this week, and are reported to have left only after extracting a bundle of notes!

In Reliance Fresh at Ambawadi, the eunuchs were spotted haggling with the managers demanding a Diwali ‘chanda’ of Rs 5,000 ($125) and are learnt to have settled for Rs 1,000 after giving them a stern reminder that they will settle nothing less than Rs 5,000 for Holi next year.

"Business is good," is all that Sonia Mausi, one of the few ring-leaders of the eunuch network, told TOI.

The strategy is simple. Get a bunch of 10-15 eunuchs, hit a mall and start clapping, asking for alms beginning with a hefty amount of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. On outright rejection, they threaten to do the ‘colour TV’, an expression meant for the obscene act of lifting ghaghras to display their private parts. Alternately they threaten aggression and could ransack the store. After the manager is called, do some hard-bargaining, and settle for anywhere between Rs 10,000-25,000.

"There is no other choice but to pay up. Even if they start running amok in the store, the damage would run into thousands of rupees," a senior official at the newly-opened Big Bazaar at Shyamal said.

But if they have no balls don't they have no testosterone and therefore no aggression? I'm really not getting this running through the mall being a thug thing.
