Conditional Driver's license.....HELP!!!

Andre's driver's license will expire the exact same day as his conditional green card. Stupid Missouri.

Has anyone else had this happen? If so, I hear the NOA1 after you file to remove conditions, states it extends his green card for one year while they process. Has anyone used this NOA1 to renew the driver's license then?

Derek's Virginia license also expires the same day as his GC. I have heard he should be able to use his NOA1 to renew his license and am keeping my fingers crossed, but you never know with the DMV. They almost refused to give him this license because he wrote his middle/confirmation name on his application and it was not on his birth certificate, grrrrr..

Anyway, if anyone has used their NOA1 to renew their license, how long did you get to renew for? I am thinking that since the NOA1 is only good for one year, then Virginia will only extend Derek's license for a year which of course means he will have to go back to the friggin' DMV again next year.

Does he have to show his Green Card just to renew his license? (I don't know Missouri.) And if he renews it before it expires, as one would normally do, his Green Card would still be valid and you might not even have to show a NOA. You should get the NOA by then though (apply as soon as you can), just in case Missouri limits your driver license to the end of your documented legal stay in the US. Your NOA should state that the Green Card in question is extended for one year. After the Green Card originally would have expired, I would expect that Missouri accepts the NOA together with the expired Green Card for getting a driver's license (don't throw the expired card out), and I wish you that your husband receives a driver license with normal expiration date and not a conditional driver license for only one year.

I moved to Minnesota and had to exchange my previous license for a Minnesota one. I had to show my (then unexpired) conditional Green Card. The expiration date of my driver license was fortunately not limited by the expiration date of the Green Card; instead the duration of the driver license was as long as for everybody else.

Nope....there is no renewing before it expires without a new GC. They used the expiration date on his 2 year GC for his DL expiration date. Otherwise, we have 6 year licenses here. And, yes, he will need the GC to renew.

I am thinking the same thing as the person above said, they will hopefully use the NOA & expired GC; but it will be for just that one year and we'll have to go back, which just sucks.

Just wondered if anyone actually did this and it worked. Or, if it didn't work, what else did you do?

We also live in Misery AKA Missouri ;)

I used it last December for my DL. The first lady did not want to accept it, so I asked for the supervisor. My DL was issued until the expiration date of the NOA1. They also wanted to see the conditional GC and the Social Security Card.

Hope this helps!

Greetings

Heike

For the Virginia person - we just went throught the experience last week. It was a pain because the woman looked at the conditional green card that was expiring that day and kept refusing to look at the one year extension letter. We had to ask for a manager and the license was extended. But, not for the full one year! The DMV manager said that it was Virginia's law that the license would only be extended for one year from the receipt date of the notice. That means, my wife's license will now expire in July of next year even though the one-year extension is good through October on next year. Makes no sense at all. The DMV manager just kept saying that there was no guarantee that USCIS would lift the condition on the green card so why should they follow what the letter says. I asked where exactly it was in the Virginia state law that this policy was written. She said the laws change every day so the policy is not written down anywhere. So aggravating!

what BS... typical DMV!!! If you are in the DC area try the Franconia DMV - they are usually ok to deal with and gave me a 5 year DL.

when I got my driver's license I still had my conditional card but the expiry date on my DL was way past the expiry date on my green card...

Same for me in Minnesota, but, because driver licenses are regulated by the states, we in Minnesota and California might just be the lucky ones, compared to the people of Misery.

In NJ...you have to have 6 "points" of various identification. My DH used his extension letter, marriage certificate, passport and various other things. They took his extension letter, no problem...but only gave him a drivers license that was good until the letter expires. Good luck. You shouldn't have a problem. And if all else fails...just go to another DMV.

Wow! What a stupid system! I am so not looking forward to our next visit to the DMV. But as JT4/25 noted, going to another DMV may be our best option.
