The Phoenix Union High School District joins the growing downtown science academic community today with the opening of its $10.5 million Bioscience High School.

The school, which includes the renovated McKinley School building, is serving freshmen and sophomores. Eventually, the school is expected to have 400 freshmen through seniors.

Bioscience High School Principal David Silcox described the campus as "a one-of-a-kind school."

"It's for kids who have an interest in science and math and who may find a large campus a little too intimidating and impersonal," Silcox said.

Bioscience High'sarrival at 512 E. Pierce St. also means a return to the urban high's roots in downtown, home of the original Phoenix Union.

One of its goals is to integrate its campus with the downtown biomedical community.

Eva Anzures, 15, who aspires to be a forensic scientist, ranked the new school "way cool."

Her freshman year was spent at neighboring Phoenix Preparatory Academy, where Bioscience High was housed in the 2006 school year.

'It's extraordinary'

"I think it's extraordinary because we will be the first group of students to use new labs, brand-new tools and science lessons all located in a new building," Anzures said. "We'll have more equipment to work with."

Science is not a subject Anzures' family gets. The Anzures had hoped the teenager would grow into a chef, following in her grandfather's footsteps. She is the first girl in her family interested in science.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
