I need to travel and I have read that some people go "in person" to get the Visa.

My question is can I go to InfoPass with my application and fees and give it to the immigration officer and apply on the spot? Or do I have to mail it in, get the receipt with the case # and take THAT in to apply? I need to go visit an ill family member.

Sadly not. I searched around the board and couldn't find any answers either way. I am hoping I can just go in person but I doubt it.

I'm not sure if your situation is dealt with differently than a K-1, but I'll tell you my own experience. I made an InfoPass appointment and took the completed application with pics, along with copies of the hospital and attending physician's notes as proof of the emergency. They do not accept cheques at the office so I had to go to the post office and purchase a money order instead. I also brought in the AOS NOA to show proof that I had applied to adjust status. The next day they called and told me the AP was ready to be picked up. Hope this helps.

I wanted to add, what normally are "emergencies" and what are not? Does it HAVE to be life or death imminent?

It honestly depends on the officer you get. I've heard some officers deny requests until the person actually passes and there is a death certificate. Others want proof of the illness. Still others will approve requests without any documentation at all. Some have tried different offices until they find someone with a heart. It really is a hit and miss game. Definitely not something you have a stomach for when you're already at your breaking point.

so in case I am out in another city, it's allowed to go to a different city for infopass to request emergency AP?
