Some interesting points about Fascism...

The fascist ideology cannot be explained logically because it is inherently irrational. It justifies giving all power to a single dictator. It identifies the leader with the nation and demands total obedience. It can only be understood in terms of its emotional and psychological impact.

.....

Fascism becomes possible when masses of people feel deeply insecure.

...

The other primary leg of fascism, besides propaganda, is terror.

...

The middle class is the class which is primarily susceptable to fascism because they value property highly, and fear of the loss of property and wealth, through unemployment and inflation, is a primary source of the insecurity which fascism feeds upon.

...

Fascism exploits nationalism by playing upon feelings of superiority over others. It also exalts militarism as the greatest way to prove superiority, and war as an acceptable, even desirable way of accomplishing national goals. People feel good about themselves if they can forget their insecurities and problems by immersing themselves in an apparently invincible nation.

....

Fascism is reactionary in that it recalls a non-existent national past of greatness which it promise to restore. It also appeals to false memories of a virtuous, rural past.

....

Totalitarianism shares many of the characteristics of fascism, and fascist states are often also totalitarian, but not every totalitarian state is fascist. Totalitarianism is a system in which the state has almost total control over its people, through the techniques common to fascism: propaganda and terror. But a totalitarian state leadership may not

necessarily endorse the reactionary nature of fascist ideology.

Hmm . . . I've noticed in this and at least one other thread that you seem to have an interest in fascism. By inference, I've concluded that you:

1). Are an amateur or professional political philosopher, or;

2). Are intimating that the US government is either becoming or is currently based upon fascist principles, or;

3). Have another yet undisclosed agenda.

Please, do explain yourself. No need to be coy.

Don't mind Steven. He is one of our more liberal members. He thinks that conservatism is the next thing to fascism. But he is a nice guy though.

Oh, I don't mind him at all. In fact, I often enjoy his posts and sardonic wit. I'm sincerely curious. Any time an "ism" is tossed about, I always wonder what wisdom is behind it. I certainly have no intention of debating the merits or drawbacks of any particular philosophical system . . . did my time in the dorm room debate club long ago, and have resigned myself to accepting things as they are, not as I think they should be. Larger forces than I are at work in the universe.

Everything has context. I've been often infered to as being a communist here, even though I am not. If people can draw parallels to such social programs as universal healthcare with communism, is it far fetched to draw parallels between speciific attitudes/views (see this post) among some Americans as fascist? Par for the course. Either you've got one eye covered not to see that or you haven't been reading enough posts on this site to recognize that, but thanks for singling me out.

everyone has their own beliefs and I don't think anyone's beliefs are right or wrong.... they are just your beliefs....

can you imagine how boring the world would be if everyone had the same beliefs and thought the same way?? :blink:

That's right. I just don't fancy the ugly labels that someone likes to throw around in lieu of actually making a point.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
