A man looking for a new home on an online mapping service has stumbled across an aerial image of a US nuclear-powered submarine in dry dock showing a part of the vessel that wasn't meant to be seen.

unbelievable.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

It is a disgrace that the mapping companies would display this. Whether they are permitted, under the law, to do so or not. National security is more important than profit period. And that should not be negotiable..

Also whoever was in charge of that naval yard should be fired and sued. Redeveloping propellers will cost hundreds of millions of dollars plus the billions to refit all of the subs with them..

National security? Give me a freaking break. If we want to cover these sorts of things it is up to us to do a better job. The fact remains that technology has advanced to the point where the average guy with a cell phone with camera, flash mem storage, etc., has the ability to steal whatever within seconds given access.

Access and accountability is key. Don't want pictures of 'secret,' systems or things in development? Make sure they are under wraps in ultra high security areas and that any sort of civilian satellite has no access. If a corporation can scan and record those images, what about China? Russia? Middle East countries or how about a terrorist cell with access to the Internet?

Data and access is even more critical. With a 4GB flash drive a person with access can steal national secrets, blueprints, classified documents, sensitive databases, or anything of this nature. Once again, it is about controlling access.

Once the information is out there you can't get it back under wraps.

Surely if there were low definition areas on maps and everything else was high res it would make things a little obvious anyway..?

And people have already stolen and sold a lot. Where do you think half of china's current technology is coming from. It sure as hell isn't from their strong scientific / engineering background.

When it comes to stuff like this there is no room for oh oopss.
