I am originally from the UK. I have a 10 year green card - It needs to be renewed March 2027. I have just received the news that my Father has Lung Cancer. I will be returning back to the UK this summer for a few weeks to be with him. Right now he seems in good spirit and is undergoing various tests to see how advanced the cancer , if it has spread and what the treatment plan will be (We find out next week). Once I have made my initial visit back to the UK I plan to apply to get my green card renewed. I have heard that there is a long wait time for this - I'm scared I will get the dreaded call to come home while my green card is in the process of renewal  and that I have not received my new one. Is there a document that USCIS can issue for me to travel back and forth to the UK while my new green card application will be pending?

I am sorry to hear about your Father's condition.  I see no need to worry.  First of all, I believe you will receive an I-797 to extend the expiration date of your Green card when you submit the I-90 for renewal.  Secondly, even if you had only an expired 10 year Green Card with you outside the US, airlines are allowed to board you to return to the US with an expired 10 year card.

Just renew your Green Card when the time comes....and take care of your Father.  The Green Card will not be an issue.  Good luck.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..
