I've eaten canned stuff as old as 8 years "expired" with no sequelae.  Refrigerated stuff is a different matter altogether.  Anything with milk or milk chocolate as an ingredient (e.g., candy) is inedible after a few months.

I think you have the stomach of a vulture.  I've opened cans that were barely a year old and the stuff inside was horrible. It looked ok, smelled ok, but tasted bad. I made a cake once and the cake mix was only a few months past its best by date. That was a complete failure. So cakes do not last at all. 

Now chocolate i have some that I bought last year in Canada and they are still good as rain. Same thing with ketchup chips

If stored properly, chocolate can last a year.

There is a difference between Expired Date and best Buy date, stuff like dairy, bread, eggs and similar items I definitely not consume it past that expiration date. But Best Buy dated items just refers to what the MFG guarantee's the item's freshness until that date, It is still good just not taste as intended.

 

If store properly, for me I have had items like dry goods, spices/mixes, oatmeal, dry pasta, condiments and vinegars/oils well past the BB date, looked and tasted perfectly fine.

Same here.  I've begun storing some of them in sealed plastic bags, to keep moisture and bugs out.

Dry cat food, when the bags are opened, can be stored similarly.
