it's not my place to decide that.......i'm not even a nj resident (thank god).

Correct, its the job of the mayor to make that kind of decision. Hence the title of this thread.

Well true, if the people of Newark decide that busting illegal immigrants is a high priority, then I'm sure a candidate will come along to replace him next election. Viva democracy! :D

That's what you meant to say, right?

Do we really want to live in a country where unqualified cops demand immigration paperwork off you because you look or sound funny? What if you forgot to have your Green Card on you that day, or as someone else said above, were in one of the many "grey" states that people going through AOS face?

Why should immigration papers be any harder to show than a licsence, registration or proof of insurance.

Copy of NOA2 would take care of your AOS question.

Excuses are why things arent getting done.

Most of the people currently applying for AOS have not received their NOA1. Is the cop going to recognize a biometrics letter? It's hardly a conservative solution to want more government regulation, like carrying around proof of citizenship.

Conservatives aren't for more and more regulation, but they are for the rule of law. Sancuary city policies aren't really about resources(that's a bit of a red herring), but about flouting federal and state laws.

i know a n illegal who has been arrested several times for no Driver's license....he apys his fine and goes about his business...most law enforcements personnel, so not care if someone is an illegal...unless it is a felony..the feds do not want to be bothered...

I agree that it can be used that way (i.e. as an excuse) - but we're talking about the city of Newark. A city with significant social problems, high level of poverty and unemployment and one of the highest crime rates in the country. The law still has yet to get a handle on that (most of the city's violent crime is gang & firearm related) - and people are expecting them to suddenly get on with addressing illegal immigration as well?

Getting rid of sanctuary status is all well and good - but unless there are organizational and logistical changes it amounts to little more than a symbolic gesture.

Calling it a 'sanctuary' city is a bit of a red herring. It's not like ICE is banned from Newark, or that the immigration status of felons is ignored. It's just that Newark has decided that it's priority isn't going to be to decide whether someone is here illegally, when, say, making a traffic stop or a domestic violence report.

I can see why Newark's doing it. You need the people to be on the side of the police if the police are going to have a chance at enforcing everyday law and order. And many people who are here legally, or even citizens, live next to illegals and are related to them. And so you might have a situation like this. Law abiding citizen kid has an older brother who is illegal, brought here at age two. Older brother is being threatened by a neighborhood gang. Or overstay mom is being beaten by her citizen boyfriend.

If the police have the policy that they are out to catch illegals, there's no way the citizen younger brother calls for the cops to help his brother or his mom. Unsurprisingly, the kid won't trust the police not to deport his mom. So, what'll he do to keep his mom from being abused or his brother from being threatened? Join a gang? Take matters into his own hands?

If the police have the policy that they'll ignore immigration status except in the case of felons, maybe citizen kid calls the cops instead of relying on the neighborhood for protection.

It's not all that different from community policing normally (making sure the cops are known to the area, recruiting cops from the area to police the area, that sort of thing.)

Agreed. "Sanctuary" in my view implies that the government is actively sheltering these people in the explicit knowledge of their illegal immigration status.

Different to saying that you have other priorities (which in Newark is no exaggeration).

Can't is a great word. The Mayor needs to get off his a$$ and do his job. It sounds like the citizenery is gettin what they wanted and voted for. If there was an uproar things would change.

Perhaps you could run for mayor, I'm sure a policy of "lets take all resources from fighting gang violence and organized crime and divert to busting illegals" would be highly successful in lowering the overall crime rate in NJ.

After all, Illegal Immigrants are the cause of all soceities problems, just like the Jews were back in Nazi Germany.
