Hello everyone,

I'm finally done! My whole N-400 process is under 200 days so I thought that's not too bad.

As I promised earlier, here's my timeline:

Note that I received my green card through EB-NIW back in 2017 and therefore submitted my N-400 under General Provision.

Day 1 - March 4 - N-400 application submitted online

Day 2 - March 5 - Received online notice: Biometric Reuse

Day 126 - July 7 - Received online notice: Interview is scheduled

Day 161 - August 11 - Interview (given N-652 - Recommended for approval)

Day 165 - August 15 - Received online notice: N-400 is recommended to be approved. Case was submitted for quality review

Day 165 - August 15 - Received online notice: Oath Ceremony will be scheduled

Day 176 - August 26 - Received online notice: Oath Ceremony Notice Was Mailed

Day 198 - September 18 -  Oath Ceremony

Some highlights:

- My interview was really quick and efficient. I arrived and went through security exactly 30 minutes before my schedule (as noted in the letter as the earliest time recommended), was called in ~25 minutes before my scheduled time, and by the exact time of my appointment, I was already done and out of the building.

- Going through the immigration process, I know that we're all used to dealing with flat, non-emotional faces of USCIS officers (if we're unlucky, sometimes we had to deal with the grumpy or rude ones), but at the day of the oath ceremony, I found that everyone was full of smiles! From all the USCIS officers, the court officers, the judge, even the security guards up front were all smiles and friendly. This really made my day!

- The judge made a wonderful 10-minute remark about what being an immigrant to this country is about, that really touched my soul and made me teary eyed. I of course knew that it's a big important day, but it still caught me off guard how I became that emotional.

I'm so grateful and relieved that this whole process is finally complete for me. My journey began almost 30 years ago as a graduate student, and then various other visa types, so it's been quite a while.

Congratulations to everyone! And for those who are still waiting, your time will come soon, too!

Congratulations!!!!

Do anyone of you upload additional evidence online after interview as scheduled? Or you just printed it all and brought it to the interview? This is for I-751 pending case with N400 interview scheduled. I heard an advice to upload prior on Jim Hacking show. If you did, which case did you upload to? N400 or I-751

what was your general experience with additional evidence?

Didn't do it, just brought evidence to interview, but was never asked for extra.

You can upload to I-751, N-400 or both. It doesn't hurt. Most likely, I-751 needs extra marital evidence more than N-400. N-400 may need other evidence - confirmation of paying taxes, outcomes of any speeding tickets etc

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a friend who request for a combo interview and her spouse passed away months before her interview. But she didn’t know that she need to filled a waiver before her interview. So, when she attended her interview they cancelled her N400 and moved her to 5 year rule but they make her i751 interview and she passed.

My recomendation? Search and filled a waiver 🙏

Update:

Good day everyone, my interview was scheduled for today, Sept 24th @ 11am. I had done my waiver letter as suggested and send along with a copy of my husband's death certificate. They did not change my appt.

I got to the Atlanta field office at 10am and waited until 10:30am to enter.  It was noticeably empty, the waiting areas were not full. I checked in at the window with my interview notice and was sent upstairs to the 2nd floor with a number (S48). When I got to the 2nd floor again it was empty and I later realized that most of the persons waiting were actually waiting for the 12pm Oat Ceremony. I also noticed that numbers were skipped from time to time, again in my busy head I'm thinking IO must be prepping the files for interview,

I waited until 12:30pm before my number was called, (realizing later that they did send an update in my USCIS account that my 11am interview was cancelled then send a 2nd update shortly thereafter that my appt was scheduled for 12:35pm) While waiting I started to get emotional as the long wait caused me to start thinking about my husband that he would have been there with me. I went with the officer to her office, and I was sworn in before I sat. She immediately said, ‘we will be removing your conditions today’, I added that I had copies of the waiver letter but she said she had it pulled up on her computer and had read it already. I started to cry, her tough demeanor changed for a quick second and said, 'I understand, everything will be ok'. She asked for my ID and I gave her my expired GC and DL, while she clicked away on her keyboard, I used the time to gather my composure.

She explained to me that my I 751 condition was lifted and I would receive my GC within 3 weeks, also for my son, now 19yrs, who is attached to the K1 filing. (my son was waiting in the car) The Officer went on to say that due to the fact that I am no longer married I am not eligible for the N400 until 5 yrs (I am presently 4+ yrs since I received my conditional GC) she then asked if I still wanted to do the N400 interview even though I would be denied due to 3 vs 5 year filing. I thought about the 50min drive with traffic and said yes, I have nothing to lose. I really wanted to do the interview just to see the process and expectations. She began to ask me the questions, I only remember a few right now - The capital of my state and Who was the 1st President? I got the 1st 6 correct (real easy) she looked up at me, smiled and said you passed, I cringed within thinking to myself 'so what?' but I didn't show it on the exterior because she had been nice/tolerable so far. I did the English test and of course I passed. She began to ask me questions from the N400 application, like my full name, height, address, job etc. I made a change to the job section as I had just started a new job in August. She continued with the other questions then I signed to the changes, and she read the Oat of Allegiance, and I also signed to that.

She explained that I would receive a letter denying my N400 and the way forward. She gave me the standard Naturalization Interview results letter with the below boxes ticked:

·         You passed the English test and the U.S. history and government test

·         USCIS will send you a written decision about your application

·         A decision cannot be made yet about your application

I knew the results of today based on all the literature I have read but I was really hoping for a miracle. I really believe that if your spouse dies after you have submitted your N400 (3yr rule) and is awaiting an appt date then the 3yr rule should be waiver as death is a natural occurrence, that’s my 2cents. That’s all I can remember for now. I wrote this so that my experience could help someone in the future as I realized from doing numerous search of my situation that it does not happen a lot (losing a spouse in the midst of the process) or person just don’t share their experience.

The bright side – I am expecting my 10 yr GC and I will apply again next year April 2026 with my son.

QQ – can I travel out of the country on my present extension while I wait for my new GC? She did give it back.

At least you got understanding of what N-400 interview is like @Roxy&Ryan

Thank you for the detailed experience here.

Technically, you can still travel with 2 year GC and extension letter. However, even with 10 year approval put aside, airlines sometimes don't know what to do with extension letters and deny boarding. If you fly, you should pick a big airline and big airports. I cannot give 100% guarantee you'll have no issues, but usually it's OK to travel

Hello, i have a friend who had the same case as you. She filled her N400 in 2023 and her husband passed away in tbe middle of the process. When she went to her citizenship interview they removed the conditions of the residence and the officer denied her N400 because she was not longer elegible under 3 year rule. They send her a withdrawal in that time. Yesterday she filled again for naturalization interview.

Probably not only filled, but also filed. N-400 cannot be filed just for the interview. It's for the whole thing over again, including biometrics, interview and oath.

Sadly that's the way it is, when spouse is no longer around (passed away or divorced), applicant cannot get citizenship under this streamlined process

Thank you for your response. I have travelled many times with my extension with no issues. I just meant traveling during the 3 week wait for my 10 yr green card.
