I-134 form

A friend of mine is also applying for a K-1 visa and her fiance had asked for the I-134 (Evidence of support form) from an immigrant officer, who told him that the I-134 is a "Mickey Mouse one" and she/he wrote a "better one".

What are people's experiences with I-134? I didn't even know there were other forms applicable. And why would they still insist on using I-134 if it is such a joke?

kitttybear,

There are two different 'support' forms used for two separate segments of the K1 process.

The I-134 (apparently the 'mickey mouse' version) is used at the time of the beneficiary's interview.

The I-864 (non-mickey-mouse version  ) is used when filing for AOS (Adjustment of Status). They're not interchangeable, nor is one better than the other, they're just different, for different purposes.

So stick with the guides and instructions - wish your friend good luck

The I-134 is a USCIS form but it is not required. It is pretty mickey mouse but is commonly used. Anybody can write their own affidavit of support and use it instead but they risk leaving something out. This/these affidavits are used to demonstrate ability to support but are not a binding contract. One COULD simply substitute a bank letter for the whole financial package in the case of a K visa but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're wealthy.

When a K visa holder adjusts status they must use the I-864 because it is actually more than an "affidavit". It is a binding contract between the sponsor and the government.

Karin und Otto, pushbrk: Thank you so much for clarifying it!! And thank you for the well-wishes too :)

We are, indeed, in the K-1 process, just before the Emabssy interview, so it is the former form we are talking about.

Thanks again :)
