I know most people here on VJ are against illegal immigrants. I brought my wife here legally but how many people here actually get to know the hispanic population? They work hard, they have good family values, they only want a better life. Can we have a little compassion and offer a solution that isn't extreme? Why note some way to work legally and not be afraid? I am not saying amnesty just a chance at something besides deportation across the board.

i have several hispanic friends. they are all against illegal immigration as well. noone has questioned hispanics work ethic, family values, or their desire for a better life. but, i don't feel their desire for a better life should come at the expense of any american or legal immigrant's opportunity for a better life. there is a solution to the problem w/o deportation. they can willingly go home & apply for a guest worker visa etc. sorry, no illegal immigrant (regardless of their ethnicity or nationality) will get any compassion from me on this issue. wanting a better life is no justification for violating the laws of the US.

There are ways to work here legally. Not for everyone that wants to but that is always going to be that way. Enforcing the law on the books is not anything extreme.

Legislator-lawyer Nathan Cooper of Cape Girardeau has pleaded guilty of fraud in connection with a scheme to import immigrants as truck drivers.

The announcement was made today by the U.S. attorney's office in St. Louis. Sentencing will be Oct. 19 for Cooper, a Republican in the Missouri House. He faces a maximum of 15 years in prison and a fine of $500,000.

As a lawyer, Cooper specialized in immigration law. Prosecutors say he relied on a provision of a federal law that allows seasonal workers to come into this country. But he used it to provide drivers for short-handed trucking companies -- a type of job outside the scope of the law, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors say Cooper bent the law by setting up shell companies, issuing bogus letters and buying visas.

In 2004-05, he took in $50,000 from trucking companies, prosecutors say. As part of his plea, he'll forfeit the money.

"The U.S. visa is one of the most coveted travel documents in the world," said the State Department's Gregory Starr, "and foreign nationals who have acquired visas fraudulently to enter the United States could perpetrate further illegal acts."

Cooper, 33, is a native of Potosi. He got his law degree from St. Louis University in 1999 and was first elected to the Missouri House in 2004.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I hope the sneaky ####### ends up paying something close to that. The same should apply to employers.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
