I understand that when conditional permanent residents who have expired green cards with extension letters try to use global entry, kiosks won't accept their green cards and they'll be sent to an officer to show their card + letter.

Has anyone here updated their permanent resident card expiration date on their TTP profile for Global Entry to the extension letter expiration date prior to traveling?  If so, what was your experience when traveling and using kiosks?

For my wife and stepdaughter they tried updating it online.   However, it would not accept the new date and kicked out any attempt to change it with an error message.  So they were unable to make the change.  Once they received their 10 year cards it did allow the change.  So it seemed to us that the TTP website was actively checking the expiration dates of the physical card with USCIS.

Traveling with extension letters and expired cards, at the facial recognition kiosk at LAX they were of course referred to an officer.  He was totally familiar with extension letters and took less than an extra minute to clear the and send them on their way.

Same here, I was never able to update expiration when I was on conditional green card. Tried walking to enrollment center twice, and both times they refused to do anything. Didn't dare just updating date online, but now I see people reporting doesn't work.

Few times facial recognition worked at Global Entry kiosks, many other times I had to see a person. Still saved me time compared to regular line.

Appreciate the responses, @top_secret and @OldUser! I won’t bother trying to update it online. Thanks!

You can try and give us an idea of what happens :) About a year ago somebody on VJ said they updated GC expiration date and traveled without an issue. But I never tried personally as wasn't sure it was allowed.

Definitely no harm in trying it.  For my wife and stepdaughter it just wouldn't let them change the date.  Nothing bad happens.  I forget the exact error message but it was nothing ominous.

Guess you can update it now without submitting anything.  The portal offered changing the expiration date only for the green card.  I updated the card.

Have you travelled abroad since updating it? How was your experience re-entering the country?

We have not yet.

Thanks. I just tried to update mine as I am travelling in a couple weeks. I got the error message saying the document couldn't be verified. Some system!

I wonder if this is new, e.g. verification.

I never dared updating expiration date on TTP while on extension letter. It was never an issue for me. Just had to see officer when using GE lane.

Yeah, I know it will be fine.

It’s just last time I entered after my GC expired, I encountered a particularly rude CBP officer who demanded I ‘prove to him that I have GE’, as his system showed ‘no trace’ of me. Fortunately I carry the plastic GE card with me (even though they *specifically* tell you it is not needed). That did enough to convince him that I did have GE, but I was hoping to avoid any interaction in future. Guess not!

That's the same error my wife and stepdaughter got when we tried updating their expiration dates with the extension letters.  Later when they got their real 10 year cards it updated online with no problem.  So our impression was that it is actively verifying the data on the actual card in real time.

But even without updating it they had no issues using GE with the expired cards and extension letters.  They just had to stop by the the officer after the kiosk which never took more than an extra minute.
