My fiancee' just got an International Driver's License in Thailand. Does anyone know about these? Are they good in all states? Eventually she will get one here in Tennesse, but I was wandering if her International one will be good for a while. Thanks for your inputs.

can't use one in kansas, checked on that for nessa. other states may allow such, you'd have to check with your state dmv.

An international drivers license or international drivers permit is a translation of information contained on a person's foreign driver license. People who need to drive in the U.S., but are not legal residents can apply for it before they leave home. To obtain an international driver's license for vacation/holiday visits to the U.S., please contact your own government.

An international driver's license must be obtained from your home country. This permit only verifies that you hold a valid license in your home country. It is your foreign driver's license that allows you to drive in the United States. Contact the authorities in your home country to get an international driving permit, as the United States does NOT issue international driver's licenses to foreign visitors.

International Drivers License

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

There is no such thing as an International Drivers Licence. In the USA the State Department authorizes AAA (American Automobile Association) to issue an International Driving Permit. This IDP does no more than verify your U.S. state driver licence information...and you have to pay for it. All other so called International Drivers License documents are a scam.

An International Drivers License (or IDL) or an International Drivers Document (IDD) is either an incorrect colloquial name for the official International Driving Permit, or is a seemingly official document that has no legal validity.

The concept that there is an International Drivers License, separate from the ordinary driver's license, is false. A document called that is usually a scam, misleading the driver into thinking that he or she is purchasing official documents accepted internationally. The only internationally accepted documentation is the International Driving Permit (IDP) combined with the standard valid driver's license from the driver's country of residence.
