But the screw up was mine, not the SSA!

We went to the office on July 10th to apply for his SS#, and after having shown them the memo saying that K1s could use their valid I94 in lieu of an EAD, they processed his application. Said that the card should arrive in the mail within two weeks and to make sure that his last name was clearly on the mailbox, otherwise they wouldn't deliver it.

Fair enough. I take my own sweet time (maybe 4 or 5 days) to make a pretty little sticker with our last names on it to affix to the mailbox. No ss card for my very own newly arrived immigrant.

Today we go down to the office to see what's up. They had issued and mailed his card THAT VERY DAY we applied! She assured me that the postman simply wouldn't de;liver it without his last name on the box, and that it was sent back to the main office. So she resubmitted the request and said to be on the look out for the card starting on Monday.

How's that for irony? A federal agency was speedier and more efficient than I!!!

If you go to the downloads tab and then click on Other Useful Forms, it's like the third one down (SSN Auth for K1, or something similar). I HIGHLY recommended taking that along.

The comment from one agent to another when I gave them that was, "Well, I guess we didn't need to turn away that other K1 this morning." Luckily for the people at the office, the person's I94 had expired, making them ineligible at that point, or I bet they would have felt REALLY bad.

It's on the SSA website as well so definitely take a print out of it with you when you go to the SSA office. Remember to wait about 2 weeks after entry to make sure you're in the SAVE system but make sure you don't do it as late as 75 days of entry because they won't issue you one based on your K1.

I keep reading that people don't receive their mail from USCIS or the SSA without their names being on the mailbox. Our names have never been on our mailbox, and we have received all our mail from USCIS.

I live in a low-income area with apartment buildings filled with renters. There's NO WAY they'd leave something from SSA in my box.

However, in my mother's lovely, high-income suburb, that wouldn't be a problem. The postal carrier even delivers mail to her house that's been incorrectly addressed.

I'll sum it up quickly. If you don't put your name on your mailbox you have a risk of not getting your greencard. Its a small risk, but a risk nonetheless. Then someone chimes in: Well I didn't put my name on my mailbox and got everything fine! To which the answer is: Yes, some people will be fine, others however are not so lucky. Is it really worth the chance of not getting your green card for doing something that takes 2 seconds (or in your case 4-5 days).

That debate recently raged for 8 pages or so over the AOS forum.
