NA3 child SSN

Hi everyone,

 

we (LPR parents) brought our daughter last week to the US and applied for her GC on arrival, got a temporary I-551 stamp and admission stamp in her passport, and also the officer wrote the A# below the stamp.

I was told that the green card should automatically come by mail, but what about my daughters Social Security card? Would it come on its own or must i go over to the office and apply it for her?

Anyone can assist with proper procedure, as i don't want to create multiple applications for her and the topic of NA3 children is not much discussed online to find accurate info

If the greencard fee was paid, it will arrive automatically.  

 

Unless there was an indication on the submitted paperwork that a SSN needed to be assigned, it will not automatically be sent.  You will have to take her into the SSA and apply.  I do recommend filling out the application ahead of heading into the office just for time savings purposes.  You'll need to bring her passport with her temporary I-551.  Some of the lesser educated SSA employees will tell you that you cannot apply for her SSN without the actual greencard in hand, but this is untrue; the endorsed visa in her passport is evidence enough to prove her lawful status in the US.

Thanks, we didn't file a DS-260 or paid any fees. Since she was under 2 years old, we were able to bring her to the US and apply for the Green card on arrival. I guess i need to go to an SSA field office to apply for it.

Because it was on arrival, you're probably going to have to wait then, until the card arrives unfortunately.  People with a machine readable IV visa in their passport can.  I don't know if the SSA can do a SAVE Verification for your kiddo or not.  That would be the other way they can verify status.

Thanks, so i don't need to wait for the physical card to go and apply in such a case? I can take her passport & birth certificate and hope for the best

Just an update for anyone reading this in the future.

 

I went to the SSA with my baby's passport and birth certificate. The employee at first didn't understand the temporary I-551 but called their supervisor that quickly said 'yep. that's good'. Now i came to the SSA around 8 days after our entry, employee filled the application with the Alien number but told me he got a prompt on his system that it needs verification.

Called their supervisor again and discussed it and was told to process it. I was advised that it may take an extra few weeks depending on how quickly her Alien number can be verified and i should expect the card mailed to me once it's done. I was also provided with a reference number in case i need to call and inquire about the application.
