Hi, i am now in California and have been since friday. I was not informed about how to obtain a social security number. Will i automatically get one or do i only get one after i get married. I need to find out as i want to get a car and get insured first. Will this be possible??

Many thanks

Brian

No, you must make application at your local SSA office.

YMMV

You need to apply for one and do so before you I-94 expires!

Take your passport and possibly marriage certificate (if you want your married name on the card) with you.

It's not a big deal..usually.

I took Claudeth to the Social Security office about two weeks after she arrived in the U.S. She received her card in another week. It did take a bit longer to change her name after we were married. Social Security needed something offical concerning the name change so when her EAD arrived she was able to get a new card. That one took about six weeks to receive. Good luck
