Dual citizenship US/Netherlands

Hi all,

Question for Dutch citizens who applied for naturalization and kept their Dutch citizenship under the marriage rule: I realize I can just go ahead and submit my naturalization form here in the US, but is there anything I need to be aware of to avoid problems in the future with regards to my Dutch citizenship (e.g. passport renewal)? Feeling a little nervous about this, as I remember the bureaucratic nightmare when renewing passports from abroad in the past... I imagine having dual citizenship only complicates that.

I tried to reach out to the Dutch consulate, but did not receive a response...

Thanks!

So, I am dual now too, but have not yet had to renew my Dutch passport.

What I know is that in order to keep your Dutch passport, you HAVE to make sure to renew your passport on time. The rules recently changed that you now have 13 years to do so, so 3y past the expiration of your passport. Though, when you need to renew will also depend on when you naturalized. If you are on Facebook, there are is the group below that has extensive info on this topic. The admin is great and has gathered a lot of info and example docs.

For renewing your Dutch passport, you’ll need an apostille on your naturalization certificate, and since that can take a while, it’s key to get that done on time.
