Hi all!

I have a question as we're planning everything before my entry in the US early July. We're thinking of going to the local office for a SSN appointment 4-5 days after my entry. Is that too soon?

Or should we wait the 10 working days as some people mention here, which at that point we'll already be married?

From what I'm reading we should be fine, but I'm wondering if anyone had a similar experience recently?

Entry records are transmitted from CBP to USCIS electronically now, so there is no need to wait that long.  1 to 2 days after US entry should be fine.  The problem is that some SSA employees are not as informed or helpful as we would like, and would insist that you need to wait 2 weeks or so before they can check the USCIS SAVE system to verify the K1 visa holder's record.

Would add that even though there is no technical reason why you cannot do it after marriage, doing it before removes one more possible barrier as there can then be no confusion about (possible) name changes. So would echo that 1 to 2 days after would be ideal.

Thank you all for your input - you're pretty much confirming I should go with my original thought and go and apply asap.

I shall post an update as soon as I'm across the pond!

Good luck with the move!
