Where will my CR1 interview be conducted?

Hello everyone,

So my wife and I are still waiting on the I-130 to be approved, but I want to get my ducks in a row.

I currently live in Bangkok, which is where I work. I am also a South African, which begs the question on where will I have to conduct my interview?

Will it be possible to conduct it in Bangkok, which will save me a flight, or will I have to schedule it in South Africa?

Sorry for the rookie question and thanks in advance.

You can do it in Bangkok if your work visa is still valid at that time.

Fantastic. Always good receiving an answer from you. Your advice is always appreciated.

Should be automatic if that was your address when you filed the I-130.

It was, but I have since moved to another apartment. No need to live in a larger place after my wife moved back to the US to establish our domicile. I assume I can update the address once we start with the NVC process?

Did you file the I-130 with a South African address or a Thai address?

We moved apartments while waiting for our NOA2.

I lived in South Korea and still live here (also South African).

They've given me an NVC case number starting with SEO (so I'll be interviewing there unless I request a transfer to JHB).

Updated my address at NVC stage.

If you filed with a South African address they will probably schedule you for JHB but you can always request a change of interview location.

  • If your petition is being processed at the National Visa Center (NVC), contact the NVC to request the transfer.  NVC will transfer cases to another IV processing post if parties provide a written request along with the address in the requested country and the proof of eligibility (citizenship/legal residency in the requested country or other documentation). This can be provided at https://nvc.state.gov/inquiry.  In limited circumstances, NVC may need to contact you for additional eligibility requirements.  Note that transferring your case might not result in immediate processing as cases are processed in order based on the date the case became documentarily qualified.

Yes, my address on the I-130 was the address my wife and I shared in Bangkok. I have since returned to Thailand from SA because I knew the wait would be long and that my job opportunities are better here, so the only thing that has changed is my apartment address. I am still in Bangkok though.

You have nothing to worry about then. You should be scheduled to interview in Bangkok and you can update your address at NVC stage.
