UK Documents for NVC

Hi folks,

My wife and I have just have our I130 approved, but haven't yet been contacted by NVC for any of the next steps. We had a long wait for the I130 (over a year) so are keen to get everything sent off for the NVC phase as soon as possible. However, on Wednesday I fly out to visit my wife in the US for 3 weeks, so I am trying to gather any documents I'll need before then, as to delaying sending things until I'm back in the UK.

From what I understand, the only documents I'll need to bring/get a copy of are:

  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Police certificate (which is ordered from ACRO?)

Is there anything else gleamingly obvious that I will need to get before my trip to complete the NVC forms?

Thanks in advance.

You also need a scan of your passport bio page and a photo.

Any divorce certificates from the petitioner if they were married before.

My advice is to get together a list of all the places you lived from the age of 16 (with the dates)

All the countries you've visited the last 5 years.

Trips and dates to the US over the last 5 years.

Filling out the DS260 was extremely annoying as it times out every 5 minutes so you want to have that information on hand and ready to input.

That's really useful. Thanks.

Will I need to evidence any of those things? I can probably muster up some mail from my past few addresses but digging out stuff from 10 years+ ago may be tricky.

You aren't taking those documents to the US are you?  I wouldn't.  If you get sent to secondary, it could logically be seen as preparations to adjust status.  Good luck on the rest of your journey.

No proof is needed for the addresses.

This is a really great point that I'd completely overlooked. I am planning on just scanning everything so I can submit which from what I've read is fine.

Even though not seemingly likely, it has happened....more than once in the past few years.

  • 2 weeks later...

Check all your documents against this site which outlines what the NVC will look for the validate the civil documents for the UK; many have got caught out assuming the short form birth certificate is acceptable, it's not, you need the full birth certificate (costs more so some parents only took the short form for their baby's).
