Updating Social Security

Hi all

My understanding is that SSA actually gives you a new social security card. So it’s not just update of citizenship on their records.

I assume that my old SSN card is still “valid” since it’s got no restrictions on it and the new one can be a spare.

thanks

If  obtained your green card before you turn 18, they will send you a new card. but if you are over 18 when you got your green card, no new card for you, just your personal information will be updated in SSA website. It happened with me and my daughter, I didn't get a new card but she did

Depends on why your SSN was issued prior to GC. If you had a SS card with a restriction typed on it, you can request a new card without the restriction.  For example, my original says it's not valid without work authorization because it was initially issued when I was on a L1 visa.  New one won't have that restriction as I'm a PR.

Thank you all.  I got my citizenship proof sent back to me and a letter that a new card is coming.   My old green card one doesn’t have a restriction on it so this will be a nice backup to have.
