Hello guys,

My son was approved for his CRBA on June 8th, but we still don't have his SSN. The officer said it should take about 6-8 weeks. I've been reading other threads where they had to apply at a local field office. Any experiences?

Our kids were approved at the Edinburgh consulate for CRBA. Several weeks later we received their SSN's through the mail to our then home address - we did not need to do anything outside of our visit to the consulate with regards to applying for their SSN.

SSA has a foreign benefits unit with the UK embassy in London.

Edit: little more research. Some embassies do not have a SSA unit therefore the onus is on the requester to apply for SSN separately from registering the child's birth.

My son was approved for his CRBA in India and we had to apply at a local office for India which was in the Philippines, Manila. Mailed his application along with certified copies from the embassy of my passport, his passport and his crba certificate. I gave my U.S address for it to be mailed to and got it in a week and a half. I know if you have it mailed to a foreign address it takes much longer. So, that was my experience.
