I am just wondering if my husband will need a social security number before applying for the adjustment of status. I am reading through this and I see that he will have to sign up for selective service. In order to do that you need a social security number right? Is the first step to get the social security number? We will need the EAD in order to get that though... gah I just need to know the order of how to do things. Can anyone shed some light? :help:

Apply for AOS and EAD. That way you'll/he'll be able to get SSN one way or the other!

K1 denied, K3/K4, CR-1/CR-2, AOS, ROC, Adoption, US citizenship and dual citizenship

!! ALL PAU!

No, you can apply without an SSN. Just write "NONE" where it asks for SSN.

Yes, if he's under 25 I believe.

In order to do that you need a social security number right?

No I don't believe so.

Is the first step to get the social security number? We will need the EAD in order to get that though...

Either apply for an EAD (through the K-3) or apply for AOS and EAD together. Once he has his EAD, he can apply for a SSN through the local SS office.

It is beneficial for a K3 to apply for a EAD as soon as you get off the plane. This way you get the EAD for the time of the visa (2 years) instead of the usual one year. I am not sure how the coming price changes will affect this but I would hate to apply for that EAD and still get swamped by the new charges when applying for AOS, which will be all inclusive.

From my understanding a K1 can apply for SSN right away, upon return to the US.

A K3 needs to wait until EAD has been granted before applying for a SSN.

Doesn't really make sense to me, but that's the way it is.

Yes- file the EAD first and seperate from the AOS- he will get 2 years instead of 1 for work authorization.

We are K-3 also. You have to get either the EAD or AOS before you can get a SSN.

This is a duplicate post (well, there's three identical ones in fact) and has already been answered by several people - see further down the page! :)

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png
