An NR73 is required by the CRA to determine residency/non-residency in Canada for tax purposes.

of course it is not a requirement for everyone leaving Canada to fill out and await a decision, but it is needed by those who have pensions or LIRA’s in Canada and want them cashed out in full. Financial institutions require this approval letter from the CRA in order to release all the funds to those former Canadian residents who now reside in the US. (Side note: 25% tax on the full payout).

with that out of the way, I am asking for feedback from those going through the NR73 process or who have gone through it, as to the length of time it took for CRA to supply a letter of non-residence decision.

thanking you in advance.

And coincidentally, I received a non-residency approval today in the mail, dated 11 Jan, based on acceptable nr73 application. So this process is now complete. It appears from start to finish, just shy of a month to complete. Lightning fast.

Great news and thanks for keeping everyone updated!
