Hi all,

I got married and changed my first and last name completely (indicated in the marriage certificate). Some of the AOS application forms only ask for current legal name but don't ask for previous names, and I'm worried that my current legal name doesn't actually match the name on any of the other documents besides the marriage certificate. For instance, I'm attaching my bank statement for my I-944 but that's still under the name indicated in my foreign passport, as well as the social security card. This applies to I-864 and I-131 as well. For these forms I did indicate in the "additional information" part with the page and item number for the "current legal name," with something like:

Name change due to marriage (See attached marriage certificate)

Maiden Name: XXX (See attached passport document)

Some of the attached documents have my maiden name, which follows the name on my passport and social security card.

Is this sufficient? I'm worried that I might confuse the heck out of the people reviewing the application since I technically still have two "legal names."

Thanks!

Where do you live that allowed you to change your first name? I never heard of a state that allows people to change first name with marriage.

After saying that, if they really allowed you to do that, then that's your legal name. There no such thing as two legal names. You indicated your previous names on form 485.

864 is filled out by your sponsor not you. 944 goes together with 485, so it applies what I said before.

Minnesota for one.  Either party to the marriage can change, add or delete any of your names.

In Mn, you can apparently even adopt an unpronounceable symbol ( aka  the artist formerly known as Prince).

Thanks for the response, @Ayrton.

Just to clarify- so if I have the evidence of name change on my I-485, would the USCIS reviewer already have that info when reviewing all the other forms like I-944 and 864? I wasn't sure if it's the same reviewer looking at the whole application packet, or if it's several people dividing up the packet. If it was the latter, I would assume that they wouldn't be aware of my name change and would be confused as to why my current legal name is different from the ones on my attached documents.

As for your question, I got married in Maine, which turns out lets you change both first and last name 🙂

864 and 944 are support evidence of the 485, so they can't be separated.
