Daisy,

An example of a DIYer who thought that they had a simple case? And subsequently found out that what you don't know can hurt you.

Yodrak

Wow, this thread is shocking.

She applied for citizenship AFTER finding out - that was also AFTER she had voted and commited her deportable felony. Good grief. She didnt' continute to break the law.

I think people are missing the facts in the article. She didn't file and then proceed to vote. She had lived her whole life thinking she was American. She ran for office in 2004. After she was elected -AFTER- someone brought up her birth in Cuba and her whole immigration status crumbled around her.

LATER ON, they come to her and slap her with a felony charge. Now, if you think she really did know she wasn't a citizen, then she should've known better than to vote. But people in this thread seem to take her to task because, it seems from their reactions, they think that she filed for citizenship, did nothing, then went ahead to run for office and vote. That's NOT what the article says.

From the article, she didn't "DIY" anything. She was a year old when she came here! Maybe her parents were bad DIYers, but based on the information in the article, she didn't slack off here. So Yodrak, I don't get your comment.

edit: i said felony here, and so have others, but it was a misdemeanor charge that she eventually went to court on, two years AFTER she learned she wasn't a citizen. here's more info: http://www.vvdailypress.com/onset?id=1533&...te=article.html

I would assume that she is somewhat educated to be a city coucil member (?) and I refused to believe that an educated person does not know their state od citizenship.

I live on the Texas/Mexico border and I do know people that were brought here as babies or young children and did grow up believing that they were USC's. The reason that I know these people is because they worked at the factory (in Mexico) where I worked. They were deported because they were illegal...and didn't know. In my opinion, what's good for one is good for all. Why should she treated any differently? We either have to deport these people...or not. shouldn't pick and choose. A lawbreaker is a lawbreaker.

You would THINK she was not ignorant. Clearly not the case.

She surely knew her immigration status, as she had Cuban parents, no US passport or green card. You need to show one of those 2 to get a Cali license. I don't get how she did it for so long.

Last week when I fille dout my Cali license form, where you register to vote it says, check here: I am a USC. yes or no

Deport her.

She's a "dry foot" Cuban. They'll never send her back to Fidel. It won't happen.

He will have expired by then ...

read somewhere that they are sending her back to Canada, the country last listed in her immigration paperwork. Her family was quoted to the effect that they will sell their house and move to Canada if the feds deport her there. Dunno what the Canadian govt feels about that.

so .. she broke many laws ... and we are to feel sorry ?

She can take her money and run.

not sure what you are refering to willis. you need to refer to something I wrote, or something I quoted from Peejay.

Daisy,

I am referring to her application for citizenship after all that had gone before, which would make her application a problematic case. Did she expect that by applying she would have no problem being granted citizenship? And that it would retroactively erase all of the things she had already done illegaly, albeit inadvertantly?

Maybe she did get legal advice with regard to her citizenship application, and it was the best - perhaps only - course of action even if it wouldn't solve her problems. As several posters have noted, newpaper articles often are incomplete or inaccurate about important details. Yet if an attorney is involved reporters like to get quotes about the case from them. In this case there is an a quote from an attorney, but the attorney is not involved with the case. And I would think that I would have been going to the DHS office with my attorney in tow if I had one.
