The travel question during interview

When the USCIS Officer asks how many times you have travelled outside the US-- do they mean in the past 5 years from time of submitting the application or 5 years from the day of the interview?

I assume 5 years from interview. If you have traveled between application submission to interview you will have to update these dates with IO.

You can always look at you application and phrase your answer to saying 'when I submitted my application...' and 'after I submitted my application..'

in my recent interview he just reviewed my application and said "I see you've made some overseas trips since you've lived here", and went through the list of countries which I confirmed was correct. He asked if I'd made any further overseas trips since the application (I hadn't) and we were all done on that question.

That's what I thought but it seems like some people say it from when you submitted. Either way, looks like we can look at the application for reference according to another answer here
