Stepchild entered Jan 2020, still no social security number

My stepdaughter entered the US on a CR2 visa in Jan 2020. Her green card arrived in May 2020 (yes, 4 months...). However, she has still not received her SSN. I will need this to add her as a dependent to my tax return next year.

Is anyone else in this situation? I've heard of at least one other person who waited 4 months for the green card and still hadn't received an SSN in May. Would just calling the SSA be okay to get a "status check" or is this something that needs to be done in-person? I'd really prefer to not go to the SSA office (if it's even open) as our area has exactly one for the entire metro region and it's always packed... not where I want to be in the times of COVID

SSA offices have been closed. You can definitely try calling to see if they have remote staff working. I’m sure she will receive her SSN by April 2021 when you would need it...

Hopefully they can solve this over the phone! Thanks for the feedback

Update: I called the national number. They said SSA's systems have had trouble communicating with USCIS's systems lately and a lot of immigrant SSNs have slipped thru the cracks this year.

Tomorrow I will call our local office to see if I can get an appointment (walk ins are closed). Otherwise since my stepdaughter is a minor I can apply via snail mail (in person not necessary for minors), although that involves mailing my original passport and her original green card, which freaks me out a little
