thanks so much for your reply, very helpful! Is the letter from GP absolutely necessary if none of those mental health problems (or any problems for that matter) exist?

If you EVER had mental health issues, then yes, you need a letter from the GP/Psychiatrist explaining diagnosis, outcome and what I mentioned earlier. Any hospital stays or major medical issues would make sense to get noted from your GP. I feel it's best to be armed with a letter and not need to produce at the medical, rather then needing a letter, not having one and delaying the process. If you are otherwise fit and healthy, then no problem and they will work with you on vaccinations if you don't have that record. Your SCR is vital though and well established on this forum

Yes you visit your surgery because you need your shot records, possibly a shot, and your NHS health care summary. Any current or previous conditions or surgeries will have to be addressed in a short write up from your GP.

Just my two cents: we didn't have to visit the GP to get the medical care summary and vaccination record.  All that was required in our case was sending a letter requesting the info (which the practice's website said to do as they don't do online medical records), which they (relatively) promptly posted to us.  So, no, you don't have to go to the GP before going for your medical, but you might depending on how your surgery operates, your medical history and whether or not your vaccinations are up to date.
