F1 with EAD/I512, question about re-entry

hey guys. currently a F1 student studying in USA. i'm in my green card process through marriage. i got my EAD and also my I-131 approved. I'm basically waiting for the interview.

 

I'm Canadian and studying in new york (near the border). How can i travel to Canada and re-enter USA safely? I heard i can't show my F1 anymore. Are requirements different while traveling by plane vs car?  I don't even have a document for I-131/I-512 etc. All i have is the EAD card which says "I512 advanced parol approved" at the bottom. Is that sufficient?

That is sufficient to reenter the US. CBP will parole you into the US pursuant to INA § 212(d)(5)(A). Thus, after that entry you won't be in F-1 status. You'll have to notify your university of the change. You'll still be able to study as your adjustment of status under Section 245 of the Act is pending.

Exactly as above.

You can re-enter using the card. But you cannot re-enter with F-1 status - you would be paroled via your combo card. The F-1 is dead the moment you leave the US.

Thank you. Also, it says i should look into form I-131 or I-931 for more info about advance parole process. I have no idea what form I-931 is. I don't even recall filling it out. Any idea what this is?

Also, they won't ask for a new I-20 at the border right? My current one expires soon. I used to get a new doc from my school every year because it expired yearly. I guess now EAD (+advanced parole) is all that matters for the purpose of crossing borders.

You have a combo card and passport, so you're set for land, sea, or air. I-931 is not applicable here. I-131 is what you filed to get AP.

Right - because you are not entering as a student.

It's the insert that came with your combo card:
