My fiancé and I are planning to be married in the US while he is on a visitor visa this summer; he’s a student and so he will then return to his country to finish his degree while I start working on the spouse visa so he could return to the US in 2021.

I know the title might be a bit confusing and I just want to preface that I’ve never sponsored anyone for a fiancé or spousal visa before. However, back in 2015 I believe (I can’t really recall) my family was friends with an Indian family here who wanted their male relative (who was still in India) to come visit and look at schools for a couple of weeks. My father let him put his name down on the DS160 form as a sponsor. We never submitted any additional paperwork, so all that was really written down was probably name and address. Again, this was just a platonic thing, and I had nothing to do with it as far as I can remember. He never was granted the visa, and we eventually just lost touch as his interest in coming wasn’t as sincere as originally believed.

Now I’m worried that if I need to use my father as a cosponsor, this might come up as a red flag. I read that previous sponsorships might make the visa officers suspicious, but I wanted  clarification...is it only an issue if it had been a sponsorship for a fiancé or spouse? Will they be able to see this when we start filing the paperwork later this year? I’m quite worried. Any advice?

You can not sponsor a visitor visa.

No reason for worry over this.  It is a non-issue.
